Can the SmokeFree WA Diamonds make it five consecutive grand final appearances in a row and a hat trick of wins? The WA State team has dominated the Australian Hockey League over this period and nearly all of the team are returning and determined to repeat the success. The core of the group are veterans of AHL yet the team has an average age of only 23.
Six Diamonds have now earned the green and gold strip of the Hockeyroos. Emily Halliday, Shelley Liddelow, Hope Munro, Kim Walker, Kobie McGurk and Ashleigh Nelson form pivotal roles around the pitch and the Diamonds also boast a wealth of young and exciting talent.
One of the strongest defences in the AHL will see full backs Halliday and McGurk dynamically supported by Jayde Taylor. Guarding the net will be keepers Kate Hubble, Penny Richardson and the young Paige Collins.
The midfield with Munro, Nelson, Lisa Pamenter and Fiona Boyce will feed through to strikers Liddelow, Chantelle Ciallella and Sian Smithson.
The season last year was capped off when the SmokeFree WA Diamonds won ‘Team of the Year’ in WA at the recent Channel 7 Sports Awards.
New coach Neil Hawgood is keen to give the team the opportunity to be successful.
