Glory awaits as sides claim finals positions

Published Wed 30 Mar 2022

The Ric Charlesworth Classic gold medal match sides have been decided after an intense round two at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University, with the Breakers and Highlanders fighting for the title in the women’s and the Outbacks and Highlanders facing off in the men’s.

The Outbacks and Highlanders went to battle in round three, with both sides in search of a win to secure their gold medal match position.

In a closely fought match, the Highlanders came back from being two-nil down to secure the draw, pipping the Outbacks on goal difference to secure their spot in the big dance.

In the other women’s match, the Breakers, who remain undefeated, handed the Suns a three-one loss and look the most likely to take the crown in 2022.

In the men’s, The Highlanders and Outbacks hit the field with their gold medal match positions all but secured, with the Highlanders hopeful of a Breakers defeat to lock in their spot in the final.

The Highlanders defeated the Outbacks three-two, pipping the then top of the standings Outbacks to take pole position on the standings and enter their first gold medal match.

The Breakers and Suns faced off in an exciting contest, with the reigning champions in the Suns securing their first win of the competition, defeating the Breakers four-two heading into their bronze medal match-up.

The Ric Charlesworth Classic finals day kicks off from 1:00pm on Saturday 2 April at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.
