In 2026, Hockey WA are proud to launch a coach development pathway designed to empower the next generation of leaders in our sport. The Under‑18 Junior Coaches Program marks a major step forward in how we nurture young athletes, not only as players, but as thinkers, mentors, and future coaches.
This initiative recognises a simple truth: the strongest teams are built by individuals who understand the game deeply, communicate effectively, and lead with confidence. By introducing coaching education earlier, we’re giving young athletes the tools to shape their own sporting journey and contribute meaningfully to the growth of their clubs, communities, and state programs.
The Foundation Lead Coach is the second accreditation in the coaching framework and is targeted at supporting junior coaches who want to begin creating positive environments for participants and taking the lead of teams.
This accreditation is completed in two parts. The first is an online course that can be completed at any time. Then the second is a face-to-face workshop where you get to implement your learning. The workshop is expected to take approximately 3 hours to complete.
The Foundation Lead Coaching Course is a purpose‑built entry‑level qualification tailored specifically for athletes under the age of 18. It blends practical learning, leadership development, and game understanding in a way that is accessible, engaging, and age‑appropriate.
Participants will explore:
· Core coaching principles – communication, planning, feedback, and athlete‑centred coaching
· Fundamental skill development – understanding movement, technique, and progression
· Game awareness – strategy, decision‑making, and reading play
· Leadership and teamwork – guiding peers, supporting younger athletes, and modelling positive behaviours
· Practical coaching experience supervised sessions, micro‑coaching tasks, and reflective learning
