Legends of WA hockey honoured at Hockey WA Life Member & Award of Merit Induction Ceremony

Players, coaches, officials and volunteers in WA hockey were recognised for their enormous contribution to the sport in Western Australia in the 2024 Hockey WA Life Member & Award of Merit Ceremony.
This year, the ceremony, held in Perth Hockey Stadium’s Eastman Lounge ahead of the Perth Thundersticks’ double-header against Hockey Club Melbourne, saw nine inductees receive prestigious awards recognising their exceptional service, leadership and commitment to hockey in WA.
Three dedicated WA hockey stalwarts were inducted as Life Members of hockey in Western Australia, with Sarah Allanson, Graham Napier and David Hatt AM all receiving acknowledgement for their outstanding service to the sport.

Jenene Hall, John Goldie, John Sydney Wright, Tammy Standley, Terry Walsh, and Simon Thomson all received an Award of Merit – all being recognised for years of service in playing, coaching, officiating and volunteering roles across Hockey WA and clubland.

Life Members
Sarah Allanson
Sarah Allanson is a highly respected umpire and mentor whose long-standing commitment to officiating in Western Australia has shaped the development of countless officials. Her leadership in WA’s strategic and grassroots programs has strengthened the state’s officiating pathways.
Achievements
- Holds International (2011) and Australian (2009) umpiring badges.
- Officiated at major international matches and tournaments, including the Australian Hockey League and Premier League grand finals (2012–2023).
- Sarah has led WA’s Elite Junior Umpiring Program, mentored senior umpires, served as a member on the Officiating Advisory Group for over a decade and the recipient of multiple Hockey WA officiating awards.
Graham Napier
Graham Napier has dedicated over 40 years to hockey in Western Australia, excelling in technical officiating and administration. His influence across WA clubs and competitions has made him a cornerstone of the sport in the state.
Achievements
- Life Member of Melville City Hockey Club, where he served as President and Vice President in multiple roles.
- Long-time Technical Official (1992–2016) and Umpire Coach, contributing across Premier League and national championships.
- Served on key Hockey WA committees, including the AHL Thundersticks and Officiating panels.
- Served on the FIH Women’s World Cup 2002 organising committee
- Represented WA and Australia as Tournament Director and Delegate at national and international Masters events.
- Recipient of the Australian Sports Medal, HWA Award of Merit in 2011, and Australian Masters Service Award.
David Hatt AM
David Hatt AM has profoundly shaped hockey in Western Australia through his leadership in coaching, administration, journalism, and strategic planning. His contributions have elevated the sport’s profile and infrastructure across the state.
Achievements
- Coached juniors and state teams, including the first WA Women’s Team, winning national titles.
- Played over 230 A Grade games for YMCA, leading them to six premierships.
- Managed WA Senior Team to four national championships and served as Kookaburras Manager.
- Served on the Hockey Australia Board and contributed to high-performance planning for WA.
- Chaired Hockey WA’s Talent ID & Development Committee and led efforts to retain the National Training Centre in Perth.
- Member and former Chair of the WA Hall of Sporting Champions, helping honour WA hockey greats.
Award of Merit Recipients
Jenene Hall
Jenene Hall has made a lasting impact on umpiring and development in Western Australia through decades of service at club and state levels. Her leadership in junior programs and officiating excellence has strengthened WA’s hockey community.
Achievements
- Umpired at Premier League, National Championships, and an international test match (Australia vs England).
- Led junior umpire development at Wanneroo, WAWHA, and YMCC, growing YMCC’s program to 80 umpires per season.
- Recipient of the Hockey WA Services to Officiating Award (2023).
John Goldie
John Goldie’s multifaceted contributions to hockey in Western Australia—as a player, coach, umpire, sponsor, and administrator—have significantly shaped the sport’s development. His legacy is marked by excellence, mentorship, and enduring service to WA hockey.
Achievements
- Key player for Cricketers Hockey Club (1962–1971), contributing to five premierships.
- Coached WA State Colts (U/21) for seven years, guiding future Olympians.
- Led A1-level teams at University and South Perth (WASPs).
- Regular A1-level umpire throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
- Long-time supporter of hockey through sponsorship via his automotive businesses.
- WAHA Board Member (1995–1997), serving as Vice President.
John Sydney Wright
John Wright’s lifelong dedication to hockey in Western Australia spans playing, umpiring, and administration. His pioneering efforts in regional development and umpiring have had a profound and lasting influence on WA hockey.
Achievements
- Founded junior hockey in the Avon Valley in 1962, establishing a schools-based competition across multiple towns.
- Earned State, Australian, and International Umpiring Badges, officiating top-level matches including WA vs Pakistan.
- Chaired the Country Committee, growing Country Week into a major multi-grade event.
- Umpired grand finals across WA and was honoured with a trophy named after him in Warren.
- Awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his service and remembered for his integrity and commitment to the spirit of hockey.
Tammy Standley
Tammy Standley is a leading technical official whose leadership has significantly elevated officiating standards in Western Australia. Her extensive service across WA competitions and mentoring roles has left a lasting impact on the local hockey community.
Achievements
- Internationally appointed official at Olympic Games, World Cups, and FIH Pro League.
- Technical Delegate for 76 matches at the Tokyo Olympics.
- Delivered over 230 Premier Division matches in WA.
- Long-standing contributor to Fremantle Cockburn Hockey Club as coach, manager, and volunteer.
- Led mentoring and development programs for Hockey WA.
- Honoured with multiple awards, including Hockey WA Outstanding Technical Official and SportWest Official of the Year.
Terry Walsh
Terry Walsh is a celebrated Olympian and international coach whose legacy in Western Australia includes decades of elite performance and leadership. His contributions to WA hockey as a player, coach, and mentor have helped shape the sport’s high-performance culture in the state.
Achievements
- Captained WA Schoolboys and won the national title with WA in 1974.
- Represented Australia at two Olympics (silver in 1976) and three World Cups (gold in 1986).
- Coached WA Men’s State Team (1981–1988).
- Led Australia to Olympic bronze and Commonwealth gold.
- Coached national teams in Malaysia, Netherlands, and India, achieving Olympic and Asian Games medals.
- Served globally in technical leadership roles; accredited FIH Master Coach.
Simon Thomson
Simon Thomson has been instrumental in the growth of Masters hockey in Western Australia. His leadership and vision for over two decades have transformed the WA Masters competition into one of the most successful and respected programs.
Achievements
- Chair of Western Hockey Masters Committee since 2004, growing the competition from 6 to 14 teams.
- Oversees one of WA’s most successful Masters competitions, known for its consistency and community impact.
