Seven Legends of WA hockey inducted into Hockey WA Hall of Champions

Western Australian hockey’s finest were celebrated in style as players, coaches and officials were honoured for their outstanding achievements and legacy at the 2025 Hockey WA Hall of Champions Induction Ceremony.
Held in the Perth Hockey Stadium’s Eastman Lounge on Sunday 12 April, the ceremony welcomed six players and one official into the Hall of Champions, recognising their remarkable contributions to the sport across Western Australia, Australia and the international stage.

The full list of inductees and their achievements is detailed below.
Fergus Kavanagh – Midfielder
Fergus Kavanagh was a cornerstone of Western Australian hockey from 2005 to 2015, earning Australian selection between 2007 and 2016. A triple Olympian (2008, 2012 and 2016) and two-time World Cup representative (2010 and 2014), his longevity, consistency and leadership at the highest level cement his legacy as one of WA’s most accomplished midfielders.

Tony Waters – Goalkeeper
Representing Western Australia from 1958 to 1968, Tony Waters also donned the green and gold in 1961, 1964 and 1965. His selection for the 1964 Olympic Games highlighted a distinguished career and marked him as one of the standout goalkeepers of his era.

Terry Leece – Forward
Terry Leece represented Western Australia from 1980 to 1984 and again in 1986, while also earning Australian honours between 1980 and 1984. A member of the 1984 Olympic Games squad and the 1981 World Cup, his attacking ability and international impact defined an outstanding playing career.

Gordon Getley – Umpire
Gordon Getley officiated at the highest level of the sport, holding an Australian and International Grade 1 Badge. He served Australian hockey from 1970 to 1984 and officiated internationally between 1973 and 1979, earning widespread respect for his professionalism, authority and contribution to the game.

Colleen Pearce – Forward
Colleen Pearce represented Western Australia from 1980 to 1983 and 1985 to 1988, alongside Australian selection from 1980 to 1985. A dual Olympian (1980 Boycott and 1984) and World Cup representative (1981 and 1983), she was a pioneering figure in women’s hockey during a formative era for the sport.

Kim Whiteman (nee Walker) – Midfielder
Kim Whiteman represented Western Australia from 2001 to 2010 and Australia in 1998, 2001 and from 2005 to 2010. An Olympian at the 2008 Olympic Games and a two-time World Cup representative (2006 and 2010), she was renowned for her composure, work rate and influence in the midfield.

Ashleigh Nelson – Striker
Ashleigh Nelson represented Western Australia from 2006 to 2015, alongside Australian selection in 2007, 2009 and from 2012 to 2016. A member of the 2012 Olympic Games squad and the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, she left a lasting impression through her athleticism, power and attacking presence.
