400 and counting for Curtin University hockey legend

Published Mon 16 May 2022

A legend of the Curtin University Hockey Club, Tanya Storer, has reached an achievement that many could only dream of after notching 400 Premier League games for her side last weekend.

Although Storer officially registered the 400-match milestone in Curtin’s recent clash against Victoria Park, due to several players and club members missing during the match for several reasons, Curtin will celebrate the milestone this weekend to ensure the legend receives the recognition she deserves.

Storer, a stalwart for Curtin across a 24-year period, says her love for the club still runs strong to this day.

“I’ve been with Curtin for 24 years now, so I think it is fair to say that I love the club,” Storer said.

“The club has always given me the support I needed to play at this level for so long.

“The most important thing is that I have made so many lifelong friends – they are such a family-orientated club who always welcome my husband and three daughters.”

Curtin University legend and women’s Premier League Team Manager, Elspeth Denning, says players like Storer are what ensures clubs like Curtin thrive.

“Tanya epitomises the pirate spirit,” Denning said.

“She is a great teammate - always the first at training and is such a positive role model for our younger players coming through the ranks.

“24 seasons at a Premier Division level is an amazing achievement – we are so proud to celebrate a legend of our club.”

Playing and working alongside hockey legends such as Denning has been a highlight for Storer, stating that she is thankful for the lifetime friendship she has made.

“My very first season I played with Elspeth (Denning) - she has been with me for every season as our Team Manager,” Storer says.

“I now play with her daughters, Kate and Kirstie, who started out as our ball kids!

“The support and friendship I have received from their family has been very special.

Reminiscing on her memorable moments, Storer says the opportunity to have played in several Grand Finals sticks out the most.

“I am so lucky to have made it to many Grand Finals,” Storer says.

“Players can go their entire career without ever experiencing what the day feels like, so I think I will look back on that as some of my fondest memories.

“On top of that, I am proud to say that I have played with, and alongside, some of the best players in the world which is really special.”

Curtin University Hockey Club will be officially celebrating Tanya Storer’s 400th game this weekend on Sunday 22 May – more information here.
