The Bevan George and Kobie McGurk Cup actioned continued at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University, with two sides making it two-from-two to kick-start their tournament run.
The women’s Outbacks have started in red-hot form in the Kobie McGurk Cup, defeating the Suns 2-1 in a close contest.
The Suns opened the scoring late in the first quarter, with Chantelle Ciallella capitalising off of an Outbacks error to hit the scoreboard.
Michele Clement found the goal for the second time in the tournament late in the second quarter to see the sides hit a 1-1 deadlock at the half; late in the third, a rocketing pass into the circle by Nicole Ilich saw Julie Waddell score a fantastic goal to give the Outbacks the lead and the win.
In a scintillating contest for both sides, the Breakers just edged the Suns 4-3 in the men’s match, continuing their strong form after a 7-2 drubbing over the Highlanders.
The Breakers opened the scoring early in the second quarter through a goal from Graham Sims, with the Suns replying quickly through Angus Burgess.
In the dying moments of the second quarter, a fantastic goal from Ken Matthews off a rocket of a pass from Dave O’Brien saw them snatch the lead heading into the half.
Former Kookaburra Chris Ciriello put the Suns in front with only minutes left in the third, with a penalty stroke and a powerful drag flick from a penalty corner into the bottom left corner of the goal giving the Suns life.
In the final minute of the third quarter, Ken Matthews again found the goal to give the Breakers the lead and the win.
The action continues on Thursday 27 October, with the women's Highlanders and Breakers facing off at 6:30pm and the men's Highlanders and Outbacks going head-to-head at 8:00pm.
