H1 Match Report: Round 2 – Perth Thundersticks v Canberra Chill

It was a day of high-intensity hockey in Perth, with the Thundersticks men falling to a dominant Canberra outfit, while the women’s side pushed their clash to a thrilling shootout before narrowly going down to the Chill.


Men

Canberra Chill delivered a dominant all-round performance to shut out the Perth Thundersticks 8–0, controlling the match from start to finish.

Both teams came out strong, with Canberra pressing early and forcing the Thundersticks onto the defensive.

Despite a penalty corner opportunity, the Thundersticks couldn’t convert, and Canberra capitalized with a goal and successful conversion through Aiden Dooley.

The Thundersticks responded with urgency, creating several chances for penalty corners, but Canberra’s defence held firm to lead 2-0 in a tightly contested, back-and-forth start.

The home side continued to battle for a response after a slow start, but Canberra maintained the pressure, dominating possession and territory.

Despite a blocked penalty corner, Canberra’s persistence paid off with a goal and conversion from Davis Atkin.

The Thundersticks showed grit with strong defensive efforts from James Collins, and a late attempt at goal via Chaz Davies and Brodee Foster, but Canberra held control to take a commanding 4–0 lead into halftime.

The Thundersticks continued to search for a breakthrough but found themselves under relentless pressure from Canberra.

Despite a crucial penalty corner block by Brodee Foster and a determined effort from Jake Harvie, Canberra dominated possession.

Ethan Boucher came close to scoring, but the team remained on the back foot, still chasing the game as Canberra maintained control, leading 4-0 at the final change.

Jake Harvie and James Collins continued to lead the Thundersticks’ spirited efforts in the final, but Canberra remained dominant.

Jake Staines struck from a penalty corner and later added another goal and conversion to extend Canberra's lead.

Brodee Foster came close to scoring, and in a final push, goalkeeper Christian Starkie was subbed off for an extra field player.

Despite a strong save by Foster on another Canberra penalty corner, the Thundersticks couldn’t find a way through.

James Day sealed the result with a final goal from a penalty corner, securing an emphatic 8–0 win for Canberra.

Women

In a thrilling contest that went down to the wire, the Perth Thundersticks showed early promise but were edged out by the Chill in a dramatic 1–1 (4–3 SO) sudden-death finish.

The match kicked off at a blistering pace, with both teams showing plenty of energy and intent.

The Thundersticks came close to opening the scoring through a powerful penalty corner strike from Madi Ratcliffe, but her shot sailed just over the bar.

The quarter saw end-to-end action with neither side able to break the deadlock, keeping the contest evenly poised.

The Thundersticks continued to push forward with early circle entries in the second quarter, but Canberra responded with mounting pressure of their own.

Zoe Newman made a crucial save to deny a Canberra penalty corner, and the even contest remained tightly balanced.

Canberra eventually broke the deadlock through a goal from Mikayla Evans, though Newman was quick to deny the conversion.

The Thundersticks hit back with a penalty corner opportunity through Annie Gibbs, while Caitlyn Templeman impressed with her work around the field.

A late penalty corner for the Thundersticks was blocked, leaving the scores level at 1–1 heading into halftime.

The Thundersticks came out firing in the third term, with Sarah Byrnes earning an early penalty corner that saw Ratcliffe’s shot narrowly miss the target.

Courtney Schonell also came close, while Zoe Newman stood tall in goal to deny Canberra’s attacking efforts.

The quarter was marked by end-to-end action and a fierce contest across the field, but with both defences holding strong, the scores remained locked at 1–1 heading into the final term.

The Thundersticks launched an early charge in the final term, with both sides pushing hard to break the deadlock.

Liné Malan came close to scoring, while Courtney Schonell’s tomahawk from a penalty corner flew just over the bar.

The Thundersticks earned another penalty corner soon after but couldn’t find the target.
Canberra responded with a penalty corner of their own, only to be denied by a strong defensive block.

As urgency built on both sides, Canberra created a couple of close chances, while PTX fought desperately to edge ahead.

A late penalty corner for the Thundersticks was blocked by Alyssa Smith, and with neither team able to find a winner, the match headed to a shootout locked at 1–1.

Despite a strong start from the Perth Thundersticks, with goals from Lexie Pickering, Madi Ratcliffe, and Karri Somerville, and standout saves by Zoe Newman, the Chill held their nerve to claim a 1–1 (4–3 SO) sudden-death victory.
