H1 Match Report: Round 5 – Perth Thundersticks v Tassie Tigers

It was a tale of two results for the Thundersticks, as the women’s side celebrated a dominant 6–1 win over the Tassie Tigers to revive their season, while the men’s team were outclassed by a clinical Tigers outfit in an 8–1 defeat.
Men
Despite a determined effort from the Thundersticks, Tasmania proved too strong across all four quarters, dominating possession and capitalizing on key moments to secure a commanding 8–1 victory in a physical and fast-paced encounter.
The Tigers started strong, applying early pressure led by Jack Welch and forcing the Thundersticks into a defensive posture.
Although the Tigers earned a penalty corner, the shot was deflected off the post and cleared by goalkeeper Christian Starkie.
Though captain Jake Harvie was forced off the turf after taking a ball to the face, the Thundersticks stepped up and earned a penalty corner with Tom Harvie capitalising to put them on the board.
The lead was short-lived with the Tigers running hot late in the term with Ehren Hazell and Tim Deavin scoring field goals and successfully converting to lead 4-1 at quarter time.
The second quarter opened with continued physicality as both sides battled for control.
Jake Harvie returned to the field after his earlier injury, but it was Tassie who struck first, earning a penalty stroke which Ehren Hazell calmly converted.
Lachlan Rogers followed up with a successful conversion, extending the Tigers’ lead.
Tassie maintained their dominance, controlling possession and repeatedly threatening the circle.
Despite the Thundersticks’ efforts to stay in the contest, they struggled to break through Tassie’s defensive wall.
By halftime, the Tigers had surged ahead to a commanding 6–1 lead.
The Thundersticks entered the third quarter determined to salvage their efforts, but Tassie continued to apply relentless pressure.
The Thundersticks earned a penalty corner but couldn’t convert, with the shot drifting wide.
Tassie responded with a penalty corner of their own, and after a second attempt, Eddie Ockenden found the net to extend their lead.
Despite the Thundersticks’ attempts to fight back, Tassie remained firmly in control, heading into the final break with a commanding 7–1 advantage.
The Thundersticks entered the final term with determination, continuing to fight despite being forced into a largely defensive role.
Tassie added to their tally with a field goal from Hayden Beltz, though Christian Starkie denied the conversion with a sharp save.
The quarter saw plenty of back-and-forth play, but the Thundersticks struggled to break through Tassie’s disciplined structure and couldn’t generate meaningful circle entries.
Tassie remained two steps ahead, narrowly missing another penalty corner opportunity and seeing a close-range shot from Liam Flynn denied by Magnus McCausland.
The Tigers sealed a dominant performance with an 8–1 victory.

The Thundersticks delivered a clinical and composed performance to claim their first win of the 2025 ONE Active Hockey One season, shutting out Tassie Tigers 6–1 in a match defined by strong defence, sharp finishing, and relentless pressure.
The opening term saw a fairly even contest, with both sides trading possession in a fast-paced start.
Tassie pushed hard with an aggressive press, while the Thundersticks looked to break through for early circle entries.

The Tigers pushed hard for a late comeback in the final term, earning multiple penalty corners, but the Thundersticks held firm with disciplined defence.
The Thundersticks then earned a penalty stroke, which Kaitlin Nobbs calmly converted, followed by a successful conversion from Courtney Schonell to further extend the lead.
Despite a last-gasp penalty corner goal via Stephanie Kershaw putting the Tigers on the board, the Thundersticks remained composed and in control, securing their first win of the 2025 season with a dominant 6–1 victory.
