Day 5

Wickham's winner downs trans-Tasman rivals

West Aussie TJ Wickham scored the sealer as the Kookaburras continued their unbeaten Olympic run with a 4-2 win over trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand.

Wickham was one of three WA athletes involved alongside co-captain Aran Zalewski and midfielder Trent Mitton in Australia’s fourth consecutive win.

Scores were level at 1-1 midway through the last quarter before man of the moment Tim Brand netted his second goal which got the ball rolling.

Brand also had a hand in the Kookas’ sealer, crossing the ball to Blake Govers before Wickham joined the party with four minutes to go.

New Zealander Kane Russell hit back with his second in the dying minutes but the damage was already done.

Hockeyroos take down hosts in close prime-time thriller!

Karri Somerville and the Hockeyroos have continued their unbeaten run with a hard-fought 1-0 win over hosts Japan in Tokyo on Wednesday night.

The Perth Thundersticks star was an integral part of the well-organised defence that withstood a feisty Japanese outfit for their second clean sheet in three games.

It was a tense final few minutes as Japan took their goalkeeper off to add an extra player, peppering the Australian backline relentlessly.

The Hockeyroos’ third win in as many starts was enough to book their quarter-finals place, with two pool games still to come.

Scores were deadlocked a 0-0 at half-time before squad latecomer Maddy Fitzpatrick struck with a drag flick at the 33-minute mark.

Japan broke through Australia’s defence late in the first half, only for the goal to be disallowed after a successful referral for the ball not travelling five yards prior to entering the attacking circle.

The Hockeyroos will take on New Zealand tomorrow night at 2015hrs AWST, keep your eyes on the blog and Seven's coverage for all you need!
