Hockeyroos 2024 squad revealed

Published Thu 07 Dec 2023

Three WA-born hockey stars have been named as part of the 22-player Hockeyroos squad brimming with talent selected for the next year of tournaments as attention turns towards the Pathway to Paris 2024.

Aleisha Power (Northam), Karri Somerville (Perth) and Penny Squibb (Tambellup) have been selected into the extended squad, which also features a plethora of hockey talent that graced WA fields during the 2023 Hockey WA Premier League season.

2023 Premier League Division 1 premiers Suburban Lions will have representation in Alice Arnott and Amy Lawton, while minor premiers Hale will have the likes of Harriet Shand and Mariah Williams run out for the Hockeyroos.

Victoria Park Xavier will have plenty of representation in Karri Somerville & Aleisha Power, who looks to make a comeback from an ankle injury, Rebecca Greiner & Greta Hayes featured for Westside Wolves, Jocelyn Bartram & Grace Stewart played for North Coast Raiders, Stephanie Kershaw ran out for WASP during the Premier League season, Brooke Peris brought experience to Whitford Hockey Club in their first venture into the top division, Jane Claxton played for Reds Hockey Club, and Kaitlin Nobbs & Penny Squibb featured for Curtin University.

Head coach Katrina Powell combined a mix of experience and new talent in the 2024 squad, off the back of solid performances across the players' respective club seasons, the JDH Hockey One season and a number of other events.

“There has been some really standout performances throughout the year, from the FIH Pro League Series, Test series against China and India, successful Oceania Cup Olympic qualifiers and the recent JDH Hockey One League,” Powell said.

“Essentially this has enabled the National Selection Panel to select a squad with a really good mix of youth and experience, which is favourable leading into an Olympic year.

“The fact that the squad will again be centralised at hockey’s high-performance home in Perth is also very fortunate.

"The opportunity to have all the athletes together is something that the team and I are very excited about."

The Hockeyroos have a proud history, having secured three gold medal wins since women’s hockey was first introduced to the summer Games in 1980.

They won silver at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and bronze at the FIH Women’s World Cup, both in 2022, and will be looking to add to their collection following a disappointing ending to their campaign at the last Olympics in Tokyo in 2021.

Their 2024 campaign commences with the FIH Pro League season five to be played from Sunday 4th February – Sunday 18th February, with matches against China, USA, India and the Netherlands.

They will then head to Belgium and England for their next season five series against Belgium, Argentina, Great Britain and Germany from Wednesday 29th May – Wednesday 12th June.

All Hockeyroos and Kookaburras matches will be streamed LIVE and FREE on 7Plus.
