Lions improvement sees surge to top of women's Premier League ladder

Published Mon 08 May 2023

Suburban Lions sit at the top of the women’s ladder with their fourth win on the trot, defeating Whitford 5-0 in a strong showing at the Troy Pickard Hockey Centre.

Matilda Banfield and Meg McCaffrey both scored two in the win, while Hockeyroo Amy Lawton scored the final goal late in the 56th minute.

The start to the 2023 season has seen a significant improvement for the emerging Lions side after a sixth-place finish in 2022.

Victoria Park have climbed to third on the women’s ladder after a 3-1 win over North Coast Raiders.

Both sides were level at 1-1 heading into the final term, but Victoria Park’s Rachel Frusher scored twice, from a penalty corner and penalty stroke, in the 46th and 59th minutes to claim the victory.

The men’s Victoria Park side suffered a 5-3 loss to Melville in a James Day masterclass.

Day scored all five of his side’s goals, showcasing his attacking prowess on penalty corners with all four scores falling from set pieces.

A clutch penalty corner score from Hale’s Harriet Shand secured the three points for her side over Reds.

Heading into the final minutes, both sides were level at 2-2, but Shand’s score in the 55th minute proved to be the sealer.

In the men’s match between Hale and Reds, Hale claimed a strong 4-1 win, with Liam Flynn scoring two to take his season tally of goals to an astonishing 21 scores.

YMCC’s third win of the season in the men’s Premier League came in a 4-2 victory over Fremantle Cockburn at Lemnos Field.

Despite the Magpies’ Ehren Hazell scoring two, four individual goal scorers for YMCC proved to be too much in a solid win for the side.

Whitford and Old Guildfordians Mundaring competed in a thrilling 4-4 draw in the men’s Premier League with elite scoring on display.

Old Guildfordians’ Chris Ciriello scored all four of his side's goals, while Whitford import Fraser Heigh scored three to take his tally to 10 for the season.

The men’s and women’s WASPs and Westside Wolves competed in a double-header at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University, with the WASPs men and Wolves Women both claiming victories.

WASPs men claimed their second win of the season in a 2-1 showing against a formidable Wolves outfit.

In the women’s match, Wolves were dominant, securing a 5-2 win – their third of the season.

Wolves’ Madi Ratcliffe scored a hat-trick, while Elly Buckley and WASPs’ Melissa Luff both scored two for the match.
