Next-gen hockey heroes shine in classic outing

Published Mon 15 Nov 2021

The Future Thundersticks Classic has kicked off for 2021 in red-hot fashion, with the state’s budding young hockey stars putting on scintillating performances in the first round of action at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.

The Suns in the boys and the Breakers in the girls, comprising of players from the Perth Thundersticks 14s Academy, sit at the top of their respective competitions after completing an unbeaten run of three games on the first day of action.

Georgia Hiskins (3) from the girls Breakers and Reece Cotterell (2), Jack Mills (2) and Jacob Oats (2) from the boys Suns have led the way for the two top sides in scoring.

The Suns opened their strong tournament run in the boys competition with a 5-2 win against the Storm (U13s State Team).

The Storm sit at third on the standings in the boys after defeating their U13 counterparts the Lightning, who sit in last, in a dominant 5-1 win; Storm’s Ben Davies starred with two goals to his name.

The Highlanders look to be the likely challengers for the Suns in the boys competition, with one win, one draw and one loss across their three games.

The Highlanders narrowly escaped an upset from the Lightning in their opening match, with two unanswered goals to the lightning from Charlie Hampson and Quinn Jones kicking the Highlanders in to gear, who eventually found two of their own with Zac Whirledge and Joshua Vesely finding the goal to claim a 2-2 draw.

In the girls competition, the Breakers have showed their defensive prowess, with all teams across the three matches unable to find the back of the net against them.

The Outbacks sit close behind in second with two wins, defeating the Storm and Lightning 3-0 and 3-2 respectively.

Both U13 state teams sit on equal points, with the lightning just edging ahead on goal difference.

The two sides split their match 1-1 in a hotly contested match at the end of day one's action; Storms Celeste Le Roux opened the scoring early in the third minute to put her side in the leade but Lightning's Lauren Blair responded swiftly after half-time to put the sides at a deadlock until the final buzzer.

The Future Thundersticks Classic action continues on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 November at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University – entry is FREE to all fixtures.
