Note from the CEO | A reminder to respect our Umpires & Officials

To the Western Australian Hockey Community, 

As the 2025 hockey season continues, it is important to remember the vital role our umpires and officials play at all levels of the game – from the grassroots to the elite. 

Put it simply, without our officials, there is no game. 

Umpires and officials are just as essential as our players on the field. Every week, they dedicate their time, energy and expertise to ensure hockey is played in a safe, fair and enjoyable environment for all participants. 

At Hockey WA, we stand firmly behind Hockey Australia’s National Integrity Framework, and Code of Conduct, all of which make it clear that there is absolutely no place for abuse, bullying, or harassment in our sport. 

This commitment is also reflected in our Respect: It’s Your Call campaign, which offers practical guidance to help maintain a positive and respectful hockey culture.  

As part of this campaign, we have created a range of digital resources for clubs to utilise. I highly encourage all clubs and members to visit the web page here to access these resources and spread the message on how important a positive environment is for our officials. 

We understand that officiating isn’t easy. Mistakes will happen – it's naturally part of the game. But criticism, abuse, or threats toward umpires and officials are never acceptable. 

If you feel frustration on the sideline, take a moment to pause and choose respect. And if you hear others crossing the line, lead by example. 

We all share the responsibility of creating a positive, inclusive hockey environment. That includes showing the same appreciation to our officials that we extend to teammates and opponents. A simple “thank you” can go a long way. 

Let’s continue working together to keep WA hockey strong by valuing everyone who makes our game possible.
