OGMHC impress in much-improved start to season
Published Sun 01 May 2022
Old Guildfordians Mundaring have had a much-improved start to the 2022 Premier League season, securing their second win with a 2-0 victory over Whitford at Guildford Turf.
After only managing the three wins in 2021, the side looks to stake their claims as a formidable force this season, now sitting sixth in the standings.
In a tight game against Whitford, both sides sat at a 0-0 deadlock until the final quarter, with a thrilling finish from OGMHC seeing goals from Sebastian Chandraratna and Jacob Wetherley in the 57th and 59th minutes secure the victory in a late attacking push.
The men’s and women’s Melville and Westside Wolves sides clashed in two very different results for both clubs at Pulse Stadium.
The 2022 men’s premiers Melville continue to impress with another victory in the books, this time taking down Wolves 5-0 in a strong team performance.
Justin McDougall has continued his hot start to this year, scoring the opening and last goal of the match to take his tally to four for the season, sitting in equal fourth on the goal scoring standings alongside powerhouse drag flicker James Day, who also found the goal in the 42nd minute of the match.
Melville star Ben Staines rounded off the day’s scoring for Melville, scoring in the 34th and 47th minutes to help his side to the dominant 5-0 win.
The women’s match flipped the score line of the men’s match, with Wolves defeating Melville 5-0 to claim their first win of the season.
New Wolves star Savannah Fitzpatrick found the goal twice, scoring the first and the last in the fourth and 51st minutes.
Jessica Freedman scored two for the match in the 28th and 42nd minutes, while penalty corner specialist Jemma Buckley scored a goal of her own in the 36th minute.
YMCC and Fremantle Cockburn competed in a tough 1-1 draw with a points-scoring result a chance for both sides until the final moments of the match.
Both sides were unable to score heading into the final quarter, until the final minutes of the match when Fremantle Cockburn’s Ehren Hazell scored a field goal in the 53rd minute.
With YM on the back foot and unable to find goal for much of the match, a classy effort from Christopher Lim in the 58th minute found the goal with YM able to snatch the points off Fremantle Cockburn.
North Coast Raiders continued their impressive start to the 2022 season, defeating Suburban Lions 3-0 in a strong performance at Warwick Hockey Centre.
Star Raiders Jacqui Day, Jordyn Holzberger and Hockeyroo Shanea Tonkin all scored in the 12th, 22nd and 36th minutes to lead their side to victory.
Victoria Park Xavier claimed two victories in the men’s and women’s double-header against Reds at Aquinas Turf.
After making the 2021 Grand Final, Reds are yet to replicate last year’s efforts, going down 4-1 to Victoria Park in the men’s match.
Victoria Park’s Tim Bates opened the scoring for his side in the 23rd minute, but Reds’ star striker in Kookaburra Blake Govers quickly replied in the 34th minute.
Victoria Park then piled on three unanswered goals in the second half to overcome Reds’ reply to take home the three points.
Victoria Park defeated the newly promoted Reds women’s side 3-1 in a similar result to the men’s match.
Victoria Park’s Harriet Collins opened the scoring early in the match in the fifth minute but Reds’ Madison Fitzpatrick replied with a goal in the 10th minute to bring the score to 1-1.
Victoria Park applied the attacking pressure, scoring two unsanswered goals through Renee Rockliff in the 25th minute and Harriet Collins again in the 37th minute to lead the side to victory.
Hale completed the double-header victory on Sunday, with both men's and women's sides taking down WASPs 5-1 and 3-0 respectively.
In the men's match, WASPs opened the scoring early in the second minute through Kyle Potter, but Hale replied with five unanswered goals to hand WASPs a 5-1 loss.
Liam Flynn scored in the match to bring his tally to eight to lead the goal scorers for the season.
Hale sits at the top of the women's standings after their win, sitting first with two wins and one loss in a tight tussle at the top end.
In the women's between Curtin and UWA, Curtin secured their first win of the season, defeating UWA 4-2.
UWA went into the match sitting at the top of the women's standings.
Hockeyroo Penny Squibb scored a hattrick for Curtin to lead the side to a solid victory.
It was a different story in the men's match, with UWA defeating Curtin 5-0, with Curtin sitting alongside WASPs as the only men's teams to not register a win thus far.
