Perth Thundersticks Team Selection: Round 1 vs Tassie Tigers

With the start of the 2026 ONE Active Hockey One season just days away, the Perth Thundersticks are preparing to begin their latest campaign in Tasmania, where they will take on the Tassie Tigers on Saturday 10 October.

Women’s

As the Perth Thundersticks Women begin their pursuit of a third straight Hockey One title, four players are set to make their debuts in the season opener against the Tassie Tigers.

Georgia Hiskins, Sophie Nation, Beatrice Bell and Summer Greenway have all been named to make their first Hockey One appearances for the Thundersticks.

Hiskins and Greenway arrive in the squad on the back of successful campaigns with the Jillaroos, helping Australia complete a clean sweep over New Zealand in the Oceania Junior World Cup Qualifiers.

After a standout TeamStar Premier League season with Victoria Park, Hiskins earned the Rechelle Hawkes Youth Player of the Year award. Now in her third year within the Thundersticks program, she is poised to make her long-awaited debut.

Greenway also earns her first Thundersticks cap in her second year within the Thundersticks program after an impressive season with WASPS, highlighted by her selection as the 2026 Fairest & Best Women’s Goalkeeper.

Beatrice Bell joins the Thundersticks following a strong TeamStar Premier League campaign with Suburban Lions, where the English-born defender established herself as a reliable presence in the backline.

Meanwhile, Sophie Nation brings plenty of versatility to the squad. The New Zealander impressed for Reds throughout the TeamStar Premier League season and is expected to provide valuable options through the midfield and forward lines.

The quartet joins a host of returning stars from the Thundersticks side that has claimed back-to-back Hockey One championships, while Head Coach Anthony Potter prepares for his first match in charge.

The season opener could feature several familiar faces for WA hockey fans with TeamStar Premier League players Bryn Underwood, Evelyn Dalton, Jade Vanderzwan and Maddison Brooks among the Tassie Tigers squad. Most notably, the Thundersticks will likely come up against former co-captain Penny Squibb, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the opening-round clash.

Men’s

As the Perth Thundersticks Men embark on a new chapter under Head Coach Tim Geers, four players are set to make their debuts for the club in the season opener against the Tassie Tigers.

German international Johannes Grosse headlines the list of newcomers, with Daykin Stanger, Ben O’Grady and Mitchell Pace also in line to pull on the Thundersticks colours for the first time.

Grosse arrives in Perth with an impressive resume, having recently featured for German club Der Club an der Alster and as part of the German squad that claimed the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup. The experienced midfielder will add world-class quality and leadership to the Thundersticks lineup this season.

After crossing from the Brisbane Blaze, Stanger is set for his first Hockey One appearance in Thundersticks colours. The dynamic forward enters the season full of confidence following a premiership-winning campaign with YMCC in the TeamStar Premier League and brings valuable experience from the Australian Senior Performance Program and his time with the Burras.

Irish defender O’Grady will bolster the Thundersticks’ backline after joining from Adelaide Fire. A consistent performer throughout the TeamStar Premier League season with Fremantle Cockburn, he is expected to provide composure and reliability in defence.

Pace is poised to make his Hockey One debut after a solid season with Melville in the TeamStar Premier League. The versatile defender also brings representative experience, having worn the green and gold in both Indoor and Hockey5s competition.

The quarter joins a strong core of returning Thundersticks players as the side looks to build momentum and establish a new identity under Geers.

Saturday’s clash is set to feature no shortage of familiar faces for WA hockey fans, with several TeamStar Premier League players expected to line up for the Tassie Tigers. Among them is a strong Fremantle Cockburn contingent including Ehren Hazell, Jack Welch, Lachlan Rogers, Tim Deavin and former Perth Thunderstick Matt Bird, setting the stage for an intriguing season-opening encounter.
