Perth Thundersticks Team Selection: Round 2 vs Hockey Club Melbourne
Published Thu 15 Oct 2026

After contrasting opening-round results in Tasmania, the Perth Thundersticks will head to Melbourne this weekend looking to continue their early-season campaigns, with the Women taking on Hockey Club Melbourne in a Grand Final rematch and the Men aiming to upset the reigning back-to-back champions.
Women’s
Following an impressive opening-round victory in Tasmania, the Perth Thundersticks Women will hit the road for a second straight week, naming an unchanged squad for their upcoming clash with Hockey Club Melbourne.
The Thundersticks face a blockbuster 2025 ONE Active Hockey One Grand Final rematch on Saturday 17 October at Melbourne’s State Hockey & Netball Centre, taking on last year’s runners-up in what shapes as one of the standout fixtures of the round.
Fresh from a commanding clean-sheet win over the Tassie Tigers, the Thundersticks will be looking to carry that momentum into another tough away assignment as they continue their pursuit of a third consecutive Hockey One title.
Hockey Club Melbourne also enter the contest in winning form after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Brisbane Blaze, setting the stage for an exciting showdown.
Recent history favours the Thundersticks, who have claimed victory in five of their seven meetings with Hockey Club Melbourne since the launch of the current Hockey One competition in 2019.

Men’s
After an encouraging performance in their season opener against the Tassie Tigers, the Perth Thundersticks Men have made one change to their squad as they prepare for a second consecutive week on the road against reigning Hockey One champions Hockey Club Melbourne.
Ethan Yem is set to make his Hockey One debut when the Thundersticks take on back-to-back title holders Hockey Club Melbourne at Melbourne’s State Hockey & Netball Centre on Saturday 17 October.
Yem earns his opportunity following a solid TeamStar Premier League campaign with UWA, where he has impressed across both the defensive and midfield lines.
He also played a role in UWA’s back-to-back Stiles Electrical Premier League premierships in 2024 and 2025 and brings extensive representative experience, having represented Western Australia at National Championships since 2018, including being part of two Under 21 National Championship-winning teams.
The 21-year-old comes into the side in place of Sam Ashton for this weekend’s fixture.
The Thundersticks will be looking to build on the positive signs shown during the second half of their Round 1 clash with the Tassie Tigers, despite ultimately falling 4-2.
Standing in their way, however, is a Hockey Club Melbourne outfit that opened its campaign with an impressive 5-3 victory over Brisbane Blaze.
Historically, Hockey Club Melbourne has proven a difficult opponent for the Thundersticks, winning four of the six meetings between the sides since the current Hockey One competition was introduced in 2019.
Despite the challenge ahead, the Thundersticks will take confidence from their remarkable comeback victory over HC Melbourne in 2024 and will be aiming to produce another upset against the competition heavyweights.
