Published Thu 26 May 2022

Hockey WA’s Premier League men’s and women’s competitions will now be seen by more people across Australia and around the world than ever before, with the tournament to be broadcast into China through the Star Sports network.

The Premier League, arguably one of the best open-age club hockey competitions on earth, will have select 30-minute match highlights packages broadcast into mainland China’s hotels and foreign compounds across 2022 – reaching a combined 225,000 paid rooms and 25,000,000 potential viewers in China on an annual basis.

“We are delighted to take Hockey WA’s Premier League men’s and women’s competitions into China through Star Sports and to literally millions of additional viewers,” Hockey WA’s General Manager Commercial Operations, Marketing and Media, Nicholas Janzen, says.

“Our Premier League is one of the finest hockey competitions on earth and we’re elated it will now have the international audience and exposure it deserves.

“We are committed to growing the reach of the sport and our competitions, and this is a giant step forward in us accessing and showcasing our talent on the international stage.”

Hockey WA CEO Fabian Ross said the agreement was a vital one for the sport.

“This broadcast agreement is a significant one, taking our competition and elite players to new markets and audiences – a key part of our Strategic Plan,” Ross says.

“We’re excited about the future, and taking our game, our competitions, our players and our partners to more people, places and faces than ever before.

“For sports fans in China, we are excited about showcasing our talent and hope you enjoy the Star Sports coverage throughout the year.”

A final Star Sports Premier League broadcast schedule is being finalised, with Star Sports viewers in China to consult their local television guides for details.

The Star Sports China broadcast announcement follows the recent Hockey WA announcement regarding NITV broadcast across Australia.
