Reds Crowned Champions in Rare Unbeaten Season

Published Sun 18 Oct 2020

In what is a rare feat to perform in any sport, Reds Hockey Club were crowned the kings of the Hockey WA Men's Premier Division 1, after finalising an unbeaten season with a 3-2 win over UWA.

Reds looked to most certainly continue their unbeatable form in the Grand Final, opening the scoring of the match almost instantly in the 5th minute with a goal to their main man leading the attack, Blake Govers, capping off a stellar season in front of goal.

Another goal to the powerhouse side came in the 22nd minute to Cameron Buesnel, with the Perth Hockey Stadium crowd fearing that UWA will be overran and a blowout were to occur.

UWA had a different mindset; they were out to prove that they could be the giant killers, scoring the next two goals in quick succession in the 27th and 35th minutes to Coby Green and Cam Geddes respectively.

Game on! A stunned Perth Hockey Stadium crowd turned to a tense one, with the minutes ticking over and the two sides still at a 2-2 stalemate.

UWA were always the side that were going to put up the best fight to Reds, but the prospect of upsetting the star-studded team started to build to a genuine possibility, to the disbelief of those in attendance; and after enduring one of the most exciting thrillers in recent history in the Women's Premier Division 1 Grand Final, the crowd started to feel a sense of Déjà vu.

With both teams fighting it out towards the last minutes of this clash of powerhouses, it was Blake Govers who broke the hearts of the UWA faithful, doing what he does best and scoring a cracking goal with 5 minutes left on the clock.

The Reds faithful erupted on the hills of Perth Hockey Stadium and with UWA fighting until the very last minutes of the match, the siren sounded and their dreams of an undefeated run were realised.

“It was a really good effort today. All credit to UWA for a great season. We really appreciated the support from the crowd on the hill. To the Reds boys, Fantastic season. I couldn’t ask for more in my first year as captain, well done boys," said Reds captain Daniel Robertson.

Aran Zalewski of Reds ran away with the Merv Adams Medal for best afield, with the Kookaburra showing why he's one of the best in the business with a classic outing.
