Regional Round-up I 28 May 2022
Published Sat 28 May 2022
What’s happening in the regions? Send in your tips to media@hockeywa.org.au, and you may feature in the next Hockey WA Regional Round-up!
GOLDFIELDS-ESPERANCE
Kalgoorlie
Norths’ unbeaten start to the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association’s A1 men’s division continues with a 6-0 thrashing of Mines.
Preston Beurteaux scored a hat-trick and Matt Souchon added two goals as Norths made it six wins on the trot.
In the other fixture, Pegasus defeated second-placed CBC 2-1 with Callum Abraham scoring twice.
In women’s action, Susan MacDonald scored three goals and Kim Luke two as ladder leaders CBC breezed past Pegasus 7-0.
Mines beat Norths 5-1 in the other match with Danielle Caunt netting a brace.
In the women’s A2 division, multi-talented young gun Jaya Scafidi led YMHC to a 4-2 victory over Veterans with a best-afield performance.
GREAT SOUTHERN
Central Great Southern – Tambellup
Tambellup’s Penny Squibb is the gift that just keeps giving.
She’s poised to appear for the Hockeyroos at this year’s World Cup in Spain and the Netherlands in July.
Squibb has a chance at redemption after a leg injury in a pre-Olympic camp ruled her out of last year’s Tokyo Games.
Lower Great Southern – Albany
Spencer Park made it four wins from as many starts in the Lower Great Southern Hockey Association men’s A-grade competition on Saturday.
Darren Parkes was the hat-trick hero and Brodie Sarre netted two as Park defeated Manypeaks 5-2.
The ladder leaders are now six points clear of their nearest rival.
Vikings posted their first win of the season, knocking off North Albany 1-0, thanks to a late Ryan Durrell goal.
In the women’s A-grade, North Albany defeated Redbacks 2-0, and Mt Barker shared the points with Spencer Park after a 1-1 see-sawing draw.
Upper Great Southern – Narrogin
One of the top regional competitions is almost over – but not without one last action-filled night.
The Upper Great Southern Hockey Association Super League final round is set to take place in just a number of weeks.
Friday, June 10 will see the matches played at the Narrogin Hockey Turf, followed by live music performances and entertainment afterward.
For more information, head to the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association Facebook page.
WHEATBELT
Avon/Northam
Northam product Aleisha Power is one of three WA representatives to be pulling on the green and gold at this year’s Women’s World Cup in Europe.
The goalkeeper has cemented her spot in the side with strong recent performances after an untimely injury in 2021.
In other news, Tokyo Olympian Georgia Wilson is headed to the Wheatbelt!
Northam Hockey Turf will play host to a number of clinics this Sunday, May 29, for children in school grades three to 12.
Any junior coaches are also strongly encouraged to attend to learn some tips, tricks and training drills.
The Association has also put out a call for any juniors who may not already be registered for the upcoming junior Club Championships.
Any players in the area interested in playing in the 5/6’s, 7/8’s and 9/10’s in the July school holidays should contact a representative as soon as possible.
