Published Mon 15 Sep 2025
The stage is set for the Stiles Electrical Premier League Grand Finals after a weekend of heart-stopping Preliminary Final action!
Men's
Preliminary Final: Victoria Park defeated Fremantle Cockburn 1-0
A first-quarter strike from Ky Willott proved decisive as Victoria Park edged out Fremantle Cockburn 1-0 in a tense Preliminary Final, securing their place in the Stiles Electrical Premier League Men’s Grand Final. After a cagey opening exchange, Willott made the breakthrough with a clinical finish from the first penalty corner of the match, giving the Panthers an early lead. Fremantle Cockburn responded with intensity, but Victoria Park’s defence stood tall to maintain their 1-0 advantage at the first break. The second quarter saw both sides locked in a fierce midfield battle, with neither able to break through as the Panthers held their narrow lead into half time. As the match wore on, the pressure mounted. The third quarter brought a surge in tempo, with both teams pushing hard, but Victoria Park continued to absorb the pressure and protect their lead. In the final term, chances came at both ends, but the Panthers held firm under relentless pressure to seal the win. With the victory, Victoria Park now move one step closer to their first Premier League title since 2012.
Women's
Preliminary Final: Suburban Lions defeated by Hale 1-2
Hale have secured their first Stiles Electrical Premier League Women's Grand Final appearance since their 2022 premiership triumph, edging out Suburban Lions 2-1 in a thrilling Preliminary Final. From the first whistle, both sides came out firing, eager to gain the upper hand. Despite several scoring chances, the defensive lines stood strong, keeping the scoreboard locked at 0-0 by quarter time. The deadlock was finally broken in the second quarter when Tayla Claxton found the back of the net with a well-executed field goal, giving Hale the lead. Suburban Lions responded with intensity, but Hale’s defence held firm to take a 1-0 advantage into the main break. The Lions came out with renewed energy in the third quarter, and their persistence paid off when Chelsea Turner finished off a brilliant team play to level the scores. With the match finely poised at 1-1 heading into the final term, the tension was palpable. As both teams threw everything into the final quarter, it looked destined for extra time—until Liné Malan stepped up in the 55th minute, seizing her moment and slotting a decisive field goal. Despite a late surge from the Lions, Hale held their nerve to claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory. They now set their sights on a Grand Final showdown with Westside Wolves — a clash not to be missed!
Premier Division 2
UWA have punched their ticket to the Premier Division 2 Women’s Grand Final after holding off Westside Wolves in a nail-biting shootout. In a high-intensity clash, neither side could find the breakthrough during regular time, with both defences standing tall. The deadlock persisted through extra time, sending the match to a dramatic shootout. Westside Wolves struck early through Lilly Mann and Khadija Elnadi, but UWA responded with composure and class. Felicity Gallagher, Christine Aitken, and Torva Sharwood all converted their chances, sealing a 0-0 (3-2 SO) victory and a spot in the decider.
Meanwhile, Hale have secured their place in the Premier Division 2 Men’s Grand Final after a tense 1-1 (1-0 SO) win over Melville in a match that had it all. Hale struck early, with Harrison Regan converting a penalty corner in just the third minute. Melville responded after the break, with Hunter Banyard levelling the scores in the 33rd minute, also from a penalty corner. Despite both teams pushing hard, the deadlock held through the remainder of regular time and both extra time periods, setting the stage for a shootout. In a battle of nerves, both goalkeepers stood tall, but it was Maverick Cake who delivered the decisive goal. A crucial defensive stop by Travis King sealed the win for Hale, who now march into the Grand Final with momentum on their side.
