Published Mon 08 Sep 2025

The opening round of the 2025 Stiles Electrical Premier League finals delivered edge-of-your-seat excitement, featuring nail-biting contests, dramatic comebacks, and a thrilling shootout that set the tone for an electrifying finals series.

Men's

Elimination Final: YMCC def. Melville 2-2 (2-0 SO)
YMCC have pulled off a sensational comeback to keep their finals campaign alive, stunning Melville in a dramatic shootout and shaking up the finals landscape. After a tense and evenly matched opening quarter, Melville broke the deadlock early in the second with Jake Staines slotting a field goal. The pressure continued to mount on YMCC as Melville capitalized on penalty corner opportunities, with James Day converting in the 29th minute to give Melville a 2–0 lead heading into halftime. The third quarter mirrored the first, with both sides locked in a stalemate. But the fourth quarter delivered fireworks. YMCC ignited their comeback with a field goal from Luke Anderson in the 51st minute, followed just two minutes later by a penalty corner goal from Jesse Regan to level the scores. With both teams battling fiercely to find a winner, the deadlock persisted, sending the match into a nerve-wracking shootout. Goalkeepers Hunter Banyard (Melville) and Tyler Lovell (YMCC) initially stood tall, denying early attempts. But it was YMCC who struck first, with Anderson finding the net. Michael Nicoli added a second, piling pressure on Melville. Lovell then sealed the victory with a crucial save against Mitchell Pace, capping off YMCC’s dramatic turnaround.

Qualification Final: Fremantle Cockburn defeated by Victoria Park 1-2
Victoria Park have locked in a Semi Final showdown with minor premiers UWA after edging out Fremantle Cockburn in a tightly contested Qualification Final, winning 2–1. With the intensity of finals hockey in the air and both teams having drawn in previous 2025 season encounters, the stage was set for a thrilling clash. Victoria Park wasted no time asserting themselves, earning early penalty corner chances and converting through Matthew Dawson to take the lead. Fremantle Cockburn responded early in the second quarter, with Matt Bird leveling the scores via a well-executed penalty corner. The back-and-forth continued until Lawson Patten-Williams restored Victoria Park’s lead with another penalty corner goal, giving the Panthers a 2–1 advantage at halftime. The second half mirrored the tight nature of their previous meetings, with both sides battling hard but unable to break through. Despite Fremantle Cockburn’s relentless efforts, Victoria Park held firm defensively to seal the win.

Women's

Elimination Final: Victoria Park def. UWA 2-1
Victoria Park have secured their place in the next stage of the Stiles Electrical Premier League finals, holding off a determined UWA comeback to claim a hard-fought 2–1 victory. The opening quarter was a tightly contested affair, with both sides unable to break through early. It wasn’t until the 16th minute that the deadlock was broken, as Renee Rockliff found the back of the net with a sharp field goal to give the Panthers the lead. Despite UWA’s efforts to respond, Victoria Park maintained their composure and carried a 1–0 advantage into halftime. The intensity lifted in the third quarter, with both teams pushing hard, but it was the Panthers who struck again—this time through Georgia Hiskins, who converted a penalty corner just before the final break to extend the lead to 2–0. UWA refused to go down without a fight, and Neasa Flynn sparked a late surge with a field goal in the final quarter. However, Victoria Park’s defence held strong under pressure, sealing a gritty 2–1 win and booking their spot in the semi finals.

Qualification Final: Westside Wolves def. Hale 1-0
After a dip in form in recent weeks, Westside Wolves have bounced back when it mattered most, edging out a determined Hale side 1–0 in a gritty Qualification Final to secure a semi final clash with minor premiers Suburban Lions. The match began with both teams locked in a tense battle, neither able to find the breakthrough early. It wasn’t until midway through the second quarter that the deadlock was broken—Elly Buckley stepped up with a composed finish to give the Wolves the lead. Hale pushed hard to respond, but the Wolves held firm to take their 1–0 advantage into halftime. The second half saw the intensity rise, with both sides throwing everything into the contest. Despite Hale’s relentless efforts to mount a comeback, Westside’s defence stood tall, grinding out a hard-earned win in a tightly contested affair.

Premier Division 2

The Men’s Premier Division 2 finals delivered high-octane drama, with both the Qualification and Elimination Finals pushed into extra time in thrilling fashion.

In the Qualification Final, Westside Wolves struck first through Nick Woodford, who netted a field goal in the 25th minute. YMCC responded with resilience, equalising in the 48th minute via a penalty stroke from Jamie Dale. With momentum on their side, YMCC completed their comeback in extra time, as Sam Rose slotted the decisive field goal to seal a 2–1 victory and a spot in the next round.

The Elimination Final between Melville and UWA was equally dramatic. UWA opened the scoring early through Maxime Pitance, and after a quiet second quarter, the third term exploded with action. UWA added two more goals—one each from Monty Atkins (32') and Pitance (43')—while Melville’s Hunter Banyard kept his side in the contest with a penalty stroke (35') and a field goal (38'). Despite UWA holding the edge late in the match, Banyard completed his hat-trick with a clutch penalty corner goal in the dying moments, forcing extra time. Melville then capped off their stunning comeback with a match-winning field goal from Daniel Moulin, securing a 4–3 victory in a pulsating contest.

The Women’s Premier Division 2 semi finals delivered action-packed hockey, including a thrilling shootout and a commanding win.

Fremantle Cockburn pulled off a stunning comeback to book their ticket straight to the Grand Final, edging out UWA 1–1 (2–0 SO). After a tightly contested first quarter, UWA struck first with Torva Sharwood scoring a field goal in the 17th minute. Fremantle Cockburn responded with relentless pressure, eventually equalising in the 34th minute through Sofia Maldonado. Despite several penalty corner chances in the final quarter, the Magpies couldn’t break through UWA’s defence, sending the match into shootouts. Goalkeeper Lilly Banyard was the hero, denying all of UWA’s attempts, while Ella Carr and Lauren Canning converted their chances to seal the win.

Meanwhile, Westside Wolves delivered a clinical performance in their semi final against Hale, securing a 3–1 victory. Chloe Bull opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a field goal, followed by Kate Schipper extending the lead in the 18th. Georgina Mallon added a third early in the second half via a penalty stroke. Hale managed to pull one back just before the final break with a penalty corner goal from Brooke Corbett, but despite their late push, the Wolves held firm to advance with a two-goal margin.
