Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 17 wrap

With the race to the 2025 Stiles Electrical Premier League finals heating up, teams are leaving it all on the field in a fierce battle to secure a coveted spot in the finals.


Women's

WASPS 1 drew Melville 1
An exciting contest has resulted in WASPS and Melville meeting each other's match, drawing level at a goal apiece at Perth Hockey Stadium. Amid a high-pressure contest, both sides mounted the pressure on one another throughout the first half. It would not be until the third quarter that a goal would be scored, with Sophie Fidoe scoring a field goal to put the WASPS in front. However, that lead would be short-lived with Casey Donaldson scoring off a penalty stroke to bring the scores level. The stalemate continued into the fourth quarter, with neither side able to break through and take the lead, ultimately playing out in a 1-1 draw.

UWA 4 def. Westside Wolves 3
UWA have continued building form towards the finals, handing the Westside Wolves their second loss of the season by piping them 4-3 in an exciting contest at UWA Superturf. UWA would be first to hit the scoreboard with an early goal via Britney DeSilva, but the Wolves would respond with a penalty corner goal via Ava Fraser-Edwards in the ninth minute. UWA continued to push for the lead in the second quarter, scoring goals via Neasa Flynn (19') and Torva Sharwood (23') but the Wolves would remain in the contest, with an Elly Buckley field goal keeping the margin at a single goal by half time. After the contest reached a stalemate in the third qyarter, Westside Wolves were determined to fight back in the final quarter, with Elly Buckley scoring a second field goal to bring the scores level again. But a second goal from Neasa Flynn helped UWA get over the line 4-3.

YMCC 0 drew Reds 0
End to end action in a high-intensity contest saw YMCC and Reds meet each other's match, playing out in a 0-0 draw at Lemnos Field. Both sides would mount the pressure on one another but nobody would be able to charge past the defenders to hit the scoreboard.

Suburban Lions 3 def by Hale 4
As the finals race tightens, Hale have pipped an in-form Suburban Lions outfit to cement third place on the ladder. While the Lions put up a dominant effort in the opening quarter, which included a field goal via Alice Arnott, Hale would come firing back in the second quarter, scoring a field goal via Eliza Swain in the 17th minute followed by a penalty stroke goal via Claire Colwill in the 20th minute. As the match picked up intensity, Lions would level the score with Maria Guastavino securing a penalty corner goal in the 41st minute to set up an exciting final quarter. A field goal from Chelsea Turner would see the Lions back in front for the first time since the opening quarter, but Hale would fight back with a field goal from Michaela Spano and a penalty corner from Claire Colwill to claim the win.

Victoria Park 4 def. Whitford 1
Victoria Park have continued building momentum towards finals, shaking off early pressure from Whitford to claim a 4-1 win at Perth Hockey Stadium. The contest was in an early stalemate during the opening quarter with neither side letting up the pressure. However, the Panthers would break through in the second quarter, building a 2-0 lead by half time with goals via Beatriz Monger-Molowny (18') and Tatum Stewart (23'). Although Whitford would find a way to put themselves back in the contest with a Jamie Murphy field goal in the 35th minute, the Panthers extended their lead late in the third quarter with a penalty corner via Karri Somerville. After plenty of back and forth in the final quarter, Victoria Park sealed the deal with a last-gasp field goal from Olivia Richardson.


Men's

Mods-OGM 0 def by Hale 7
A dominant effort under the Friday night lights at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre has seen Hale continue to build form, defeating Mods-OGM 7-0. Hale were quick to get on the scoreboard with early goals via Sam Ashton and Sam McCulloch. As Mods-OGM tried to chase down the visitors, Hale continued to extend their lead with two quick penalty corner goals via Ian Grobbelaar in the second quarter, and a field goal from Daniel Sibbald in the third. Hale sealed the deal in the final quarter with a field goal via Jack Pearce and Grobbelaar completing a hat-trick with a late penalty stroke.

YMCC 2 def by Reds 3
As the run towards the Stiles Electrical Premier League finals continues, Reds have continued building momentum, pipping a determined YMCC outfit 3-2 at Lemnos Field. In the exciting contest, the deadlock would not be broken until the 20th minute with a penalty corner goal via Aran Zalewski earning Reds a 1-0 lead by half time. Although YMCC found a response through a Luke Blee field goal in the 42nd minute, Reds would quickly fire back with a Brodee Foster penalty corner to take back the lead by three-quarter time. In a thrilling conclusion, Zalewski would score a field goal to extend Reds' lead to two goals. Although Marshall Puzey provided a quick response, Reds held on to claim the win.

WASPS 1 def by Melville 3
Melville have continued building a case for a finals berth, bouncing back from their 5-6 loss to UWA by defeating WASPS 3-1 at Perth Hockey Stadium. Melville would be the first to hit the scoreboard, with James Day scoring a penalty corner goal in the 13th minute to establish a lead by quarter time. Melville continued building on their efforts with a field goal via Davis Atkin in the second quarter and a second James Day penalty corner in the third. Although WASPS would finally break through with a penalty corner goal via Freddie Britt, Melville held strong to win by two goals.

UWA 1 def by Westside Wolves 3
Westside Wolves have pulled off a huge upset to tighten the finals race, defeating UWA 3-1 at UWA Superturf. While UWA would be first to hit the scoreboard with a field goal via Harry Golding, the Wolves would respond with a field goal of their own from Matthew Edgar to bring the scores level by quarter time. After some back and forth in the second quarter, the Wolves took control early in the third quarter with James Cunningham scoring a field goal to put them in front. Despite UWA's efforts to chase them, Wolves would further extend their lead with a 46th minute field goal via Tom Keating and held strong to claim the win.

Victoria Park 4 def. Whitford 2
A strong showing in the first half helped Victoria Park secure their 10th win in a row, defeating Whitford 4-2 at Perth Hockey Stadium to cement second place on the ladder. Jake Whetton would be the first to hit the scoreboard for the Panthers, scoring a penalty corner goal to establish a lead. The Panthers would continue building on their lead in the second quarter with Jason Gabriel scoring a field goal in the 19th minute, and Joel Crothers scoring a penalty corner goal in the 25th minute to lead 3-0 by half time. Whitford would open their tally with a Luke Milne field goal in the third quarter, but the Panthers would respond early in the fourth with a field goal via Lawson Patten-Williams. Although Whitford would bring the margin back to two goals with a second field goal from Milne, Victoria Park held strong to claim the win.

Fremantle Cockburn 3 def. North Coast Raiders 0
Fremantle Cockburn have continued to maintain top spot on the ladder ahead of the Stiles Electrical Premier League, defeating North Coast Raiders 3-0 at Lakelands Hockey & Sporting Facility. In an exciting start to the match, neither side would score until moments before half time, with Chad Giles scoring a field goal to put the Magpies in front. From there, Fremantle Cockburn began to take control of the contest, scoring a penalty corner goal via Ehren Hazell in the third quarter, and a further penalty corner from Gobindraj Gill early in the fourth. Despite the Raiders' efforts to catch up, the Magpies were too strong, holding firm to earn the three-goal victory.


Premier Division 2

In the Women's competition, UWA and Westside Wolves could not be separated - playing out an exciting 4-4 draw, Melville and Reds played out a 2-2 draw which saw all goals scored in the opening quarter, Curtin University pipped North Coast Raiders 2-1, Fremantle Cockburn and Hale drew level at three goals apiece, and Victoria Park held off Suburban Lions 1-0.

In the Men's competition, WASPS and Melville played out a 3-3 draw, two fourth quarter goals helped Hale get themselves over the line against Rockingham Redbacks 5-4, a last-gasp goal via Sam Rose saw YMCC pip Reds 2-1, a 54th minute goal via Tom Rowe was all it took for UWA to separate themselves from Westside Wolves 1-0, Fremantle Cockburn defeated Curtin University 3-2, and Whitford pulled off a commanding 4-1 win over Victoria Park with Tristan Lasevicius and Jacob Wetherley scoring two goals each.
