Published Mon 05 May 2025
As the Stiles Electrical Premier League turned a shade of pink to acknowledge Lizzie Watkins Organ Donor Round, the weekend delivered a mix of big wins, tight finishes and surprise results in a round packed with drama and goals.
Women's
The North Coast Raiders did more than just secure three points on Saturday — they reclaimed the Lizzie Watkins Memorial Trophy in style, defeating Whitford 3-0 at Troy Pickard Hockey Centre to notch their first win of the Stiles Electrical Premier League season.
The much-anticipated clash on Saturday, 3 May, headlined the league’s Lizzie Watkins Organ Donor Round, with both sides eager to break their season duck. The intensity was high from the first whistle, but despite end-to-end action in the opening quarter, the scoreboard remained untouched.
It wasn’t until the 23rd minute that the deadlock was broken, with Cassia Poole finding the back of the net with a well-taken field goal to put the Raiders ahead.
Whitford pushed for an equaliser, but the Raiders defence stood firm, holding a 1-0 lead at half-time.
Shortly after the break, Sienna Berry doubled the advantage with a sharp finish from a penalty corner, giving the Raiders breathing room and control of the match.
Despite Whitford’s efforts to rally, they struggled to break through the Raiders' defence, trailing 2-0 heading into the final quarter.
The last period saw both teams locked in a tense stalemate as Whitford chased the game and the Raiders looked to close it out. The final blow came in the dying moments, with Maddie Daley hammering home a penalty corner in the last minute to seal a convincing 3-0 win.
The result not only gave the Raiders their first win of the season, but also returned the Lizzie Watkins Memorial Trophy to their hands — a fitting tribute to a cherished former teammate.
Elsewhere, Hale proved too strong for Victoria Park with a 5-2 win at Hale Hockey Club, Suburban Lions edged past Melville 1-0 in a tight contest at Melville Toyota Stadium, and WASPS pulled off a thrilling 3-2 upset over UWA at Perth Hockey Stadium.
The scheduled clash between Westside Wolves and Reds was postponed due to player unavailability, with a new date yet to be confirmed.
