The mining town of Kalgoorlie is set to become a hockey hive once again as it welcomes Stiles Electrical Premier League sides for this year’s Regional Round on Saturday 11 May, proudly supported by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Elite hockey fans in the Goldfields will have the chance to witness hockey at its best in their own backyard as the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association hosts a Stiles Electrical Premier League double-header between Reds Hockey Club and WASPS.

In a Stiles Electrical Premier League first, the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association will be showcased on screen with the Reds vs WASPS double-header set to be broadcast on Streamer.

Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association president Daniel Lavery said the Association is thrilled to be hosting this year’s Regional Round.

“It is a welcome return to high performance hockey in the Goldfields,” he said.

“We have been fortunate enough to host the Hockeyroos on several occasions, and we have also hosted the Perth Thundersticks in a series.

“The Goldfields community always get behind major sporting events and we can’t see this being any different.

“We are grateful to be partnering with the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Hockey WA to deliver a superb evening of hockey, and we thank both Reds and Wesley South Perth for agreeing to travel to our great city to showcase their skills.”

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor Glenn Wilson said there is great excitement building amongst the community for the upcoming Regional Round.

“Kalgoorlie-Boulder has a proud sporting culture and exceptional local talent, and we welcome and embrace opportunities to host elite competitions,” he said.

“As a regional league, the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association’s exposure to such high-level players and coaches may not come around often.

“Hosting Premier League games not only provides our community with the opportunity to watch the highest level of play in WA but also the opportunity to meet athletes whom many of our young athletes look up to.

“Whilst here, these players will host education and training workshops and school development programs, which are invaluable opportunities to teach and inspire the next generation.”

Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries Goldfields Regional Manager Kelly Waterhouse said the region has a rich history in field hockey and is excited at the prospect of hosting the Stiles Electrical Premier League Regional Round.

“The Stiles Electrical Premier League is viewed as one of the strongest domestic competitions in the world therefore opportunities for regional communities to interact with top-level athletes and coaches is invaluable,” she said.

“The benefits of the various clinics, workshops and mentoring opportunities will without doubt have a positive impact on the local Association both in the short and long term and help to inspire the next generation of hockey athletes from the Goldfields.

In addition to the Premier League double-header and scheduled matches within the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association season, hockey fever will take over the Goldfields with a wide range of events and activities scheduled for the weekend.

These include Perth Thundersticks Academy sessions, junior clinics, a coaching workshop, an umpire briefing, and an Olympics Unleashed Sundowner.

“We are incredibly excited to be travelling to the Goldfields for this year’s Stiles Electrical Premier League Regional Round,” Hockey WA Regional & Community Engagement Manager Kristen Jerkovich said.

“Having a presence and maintaining a positive relationship with our regional associations is incredibly important to us here at Hockey WA so we cannot wait to feature some of our elite athletes but also give hockey players, coaches, and officials an opportunity to showcase and develop their skills as well.

“We’d like to thank the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Goldfields office of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for helping to make this possible.”
