Shire of Mundaring backs Hockey WA’s International Indoor Challenge
Published Fri 19 Aug 2022
Elite-level indoor hockey in WA has received a boost with news the inaugural Hockey WA International Indoor Challenge, to be staged from December 2-16 and featuring high-level indoor sides from across the globe, will be supported by the Shire of Mundaring.
The announcement of the Shire’s support, providing a waiver of fees for the use of Mundaring Arena for Hockey WA, comes following Council’s decision at its Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 9 August, to support and promote the tournament.
Hockey WA CEO Fabian Ross is excited by the prospect of nations visiting Mundaring and experiencing elite-standard indoor hockey.
“It is really pleasing to be able to offer an opportunity for international teams to experience a high-level indoor competition right here in Perth at Mundaring,” Ross says.“Indoor hockey is a fantastic format of the game, and it is great to be able to further Hockey WA’s offerings of elite events in this format.
“We are really excited to welcome teams to Perth and provide the opportunity for them to experience the sites WA has to offer.
“A particular thank you to the Shire of Mundaring for their support of the event.”
Shire President James Martin said he was pleased to welcome Australian and international hockey players to the region.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Perth Hills Mundaring and our international standard facility to the world,” he said.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the players to be able to travel to play the sport they love after being restricted for the last two years.
“It will be great for our local indoor junior hockey players to experience what an international world class competition looks like.
“We hope that this may be an ongoing feature on the Shire’s sporting calendar.”
The tournament is expected to attract 150 players and support staff from USA, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Africa, Thailand, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, UK, Iran and New Zealand who will meet to compete in 55 matches across 10 days.
