The 2022 Ric Charlesworth Classic, presented by Brightside Live, is set to deliver another high-energy edition of Hockey WA’s flagship tournament featuring WA’s best from Saturday 26 March at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.

160 players are ready to fight for glory for the Breakers, Highlanders, Outbacks and Suns, with this year’s edition featuring a range of talent from WA’s elite-level open-age side, the Perth Thundersticks, junior high-performance athletes and Premier League stars.

This year’s tournament runs across a seven-day period, with the action kicking off on Saturday 26 March, with a bumper day of hockey action featuring all eight teams across four matches.

Men’s Suns Captain, Tim Geers, said the competition now plays a crucial role in preparation for the upcoming hockey season as well as giving young talent an opportunity to shine on the big stage.

“It’s an exciting competition to compete in and it gives players the chance to get some sharpness before the Premier League gets underway,” Geers said.

“Across the competition there’s a great mix of youth, established players and experienced stars.

“I know we’ve got an amazing group, with the likes of young star Cam Geddes, up and coming under-18s such as Brodie Hiskins and Mitch McGrath, then there’s ex-national players such as Tim Deavin who represented the kookaburras.”

Ex-Hockeyroo and Highlanders representative, Edwina Bone, shared Geers’ sentiment, stating it’s an exciting way for players to prepare and compete at a high-level – an opportunity most players don’t have in other states.

“It’s an exciting way to kick off the 2022 season – I know a lot of players have worked really hard with their clubs to get match ready, so it’s a great platform for players to show off all their hard work,” Bone said.

“There’s a lot of benefits to have such a high-level competition be exposed to a range of different players.

“Players such as the under-18s who are soon to head off to the National Championships can hit the field and try some new things, so it’s really beneficial to them.”

Entry to the Ric Charlesworth Classic is $5 – kids under 18 free.
