Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 3 Wrap

Published Mon 22 Apr 2024

It was another action-packed weekend on the hockey turf during round three of the Stiles Electrical Premier League.

Men’s

Two final-quarter goals via Jacob Evans helped UWA come from behind to meet WASPS’ match, with the contest ending in a 3-3 draw at Perth Hockey Stadium on Friday 19 April.

In the opening match of the round, neither WASPS nor UWA could be separated during the first quarter.

Although UWA had a few opportunities to score via penalty corners, WASPS’ defence seemed to be impenetrable.

The stalemate seemed to continue until the 26th minute, when Jack Kruger scored a field goal to put the WASPS in front.

Although UWA looked to respond, WASPS held on to lead 1-0 at the main break.

WASPS continued to build momentum in the second half with player-coach Trent Mitton scoring off a penalty stroke.

However, Chris Ciriello would open the account for UWA, scoring off a penalty corner as the match picked up intensity.

The final quarter seemed to resemble the third term, with Bryn De Bes scoring early in the term.

But this time around, Jacob Evans would provide a swift response for UWA.

Evans would later go on to score a second goal to bring the scores level.

With both teams fighting hard to walk away with the win, they ultimately ran out of time, leaving the contest deadlocked at 3-3.

Elsewhere, Ian Grobbelaar and Sam McCulloch combined to lead Hale to a 4-0 victory over Whitford by scoring two goals each, Melville held off YMCC 2-1 to record their third straight win, Jamie Rawlings helped North Coast Raiders get their first win of the season defeating Mods-OGM 2-1, Westside Wolves held off Fremantle Cockburn 1-0 in a heated contest, and Victoria Park defeated Reds 6-3.

Women’s

UWA have begun building up an undefeated streak, taking down WASPS 4-0 at Perth Hockey Stadium on Friday 19 April.

The contest began with an early stalemate with neither side letting up the pressure during the first quarter.

However, UWA would make a statement early in the second with Maddie Desilva scoring off a penalty corner.

Saysha Pillay would later add to UWA’s account and go on to lead 2-0 at half time.

While both the WASPS and UWA had opportunities to score via penalty corners in the third quarter, neither side were able to break through each other’s defence and capitalise.

In what seemed to be a case of déjà vu, UWA were quick to extend their lead in the final quarter with Jessica Butterworth scoring a field goal, followed by a field goal by Prada Herron.

Despite WASPS’ best efforts, UWA went on to record their second clean sheet win of the season.

Elsewhere, Melville and Whitford could not be separated resulting in a 0-0 draw, a Liné Malan goal in the 53rd minute saw Hale edge out North Coast Raiders 3-2, Victoria Park held off Reds 2-1, and Westside Wolves defeated Suburban Lions 3-1.
