From tight contests to moving Anzac services, there was plenty going on around the grounds during round four of the Stiles Electrical Premier League.

Men’s

The Fremantle Cockburn Magpies have held off a comeback effort from the Reds to notch their first win of the season.

In one of the traditional Anzac Day matches for the Stiles Electrical Premier League, the Magpies and the Reds went head-to-head at Lakelands Hockey & Sporting Facility on Thursday 25 April.

With both sides looking to build momentum early in the twilight match-up, neither side could be separated in the opening quarter.

It wasn’t until the 19th minute that either side would break through to score, with Nick Jennings scoring a field goal for the Magpies, only for Aaron Kleinschmidt to quickly respond for the Reds.

Fremantle Cockburn would soon get the upper hand, with Harrison Keymer scoring off a penalty corner to put the home side in front, followed by a 30th minute goal via Dylan Martin.

By the main break, Fremantle Cockburn held a two-goal advantage over the Reds.

The contest reached a stalemate once again for most of the third quarter, until Brodee Foster broke the deadlock with a field goal during the 43rd minute.

At three-quarter time, Reds were just one goal away from the Magpies.

Despite the Reds’ best efforts to build momentum, the Magpies held on to win 3-2.

Elsewhere, WASPS have continued building an undefeated streak, beating out Victoria Park 3-1 at Perth Hockey Stadium, a Jaxon Geddes hat-trick helped UWA dominate North Coast Raiders 10-2, Oscar Charlesworth and Patrick Andrew combined to help Westside Wolves pull off a 4-0 win over Mods-OGM, Hale held off YMCC 2-1, and two goals from James Day helped Melville defeat Whitford 2-0.

The WASPS and the Victoria Park Panthers faced off at Perth Hockey Stadium during the traditional Anzac Day double-header on Thursday 25 April.

The match-up entered an early stalemate during the first quarter, with neither side managing to break through each other’s defence to score.

As both teams put the pressure on one another, the scores remained level at 1 goal apiece at half time.

The third quarter was where the WASPS really came into their own and found their groove, taking the lead with a Kyra White penalty corner and a Camryn Tidy field goal.

With victory within their reach, the WASPS continued their hot streak in the final quarter, as Rina Hughes scored a penalty corner to extend their lead.

Although Victoria Park managed to shrink the margin down to two goals thanks to a penalty corner via Sarah Hasselerharm, the WASPS held on to record their first victory of the season 4-2.
