Stiles Electrical Premier League Round 6 Wrap

Published Mon 06 May 2024

From late comeback efforts to stunning victories, there was plenty going on around the grounds during round six of the Stiles Electrical Premier League.

Men’s

YMCC have notched two wins in the space of four days, holding off a relentless Fremantle Cockburn outfit 2-0 on Saturday 4 May.

During the Lizzie Watkins Organ Donor Round, YMCC and Fremantle Cockburn went head-to-head at Lemnos Field, where the home side were quick to get on the scoreboard.

It took Michael Nicoli just two minutes to penetrate Fremantle Cockburn’s defence to get YMCC on the board.

What followed resembled a tug of war for territory between both teams for the remainder of the first half.

While Fremantle Cockburn fought hard to respond, YMCC seemed to have an answer for everything the Magpies threw at them.

It wasn’t until late in the third term that a goal would be scored, with Jesse Regan slotting in a field goal to extend YMCC’s lead.

Although the Magpies continued pushing for a scoring opportunity, their efforts proved futile, with YMCC going on to claim the 2-0 win.

Earlier in the week, YMCC defeated Victoria Park 3-1 with two goals from Luke Blee and a further goal from Jesse Regan.

Elsewhere during round five, a dominant effort from Reds saw them defeat Mods-OGM 10-0, Fremantle Cockburn drew level with WASPS 1-1, Westside Wolves held off Melville 1-0, with matches between Hale & North Coast Raiders, and UWA & Whitford to come.

The remainder of round six saw Hale defeat Reds 5-2 including a hat-trick from Liam Flynn, Westside Wolves defeated North Coast Raiders 2-0, Whitford edged out Mods-OGM, and Melville handed WASPS their first loss of the season, defeating them 1-0.

Women’s

A fierce battle for the Lizzie Watkins Memorial Trophy has seen Westside Wolves prevail over North Coast Raiders 3-2 on Saturday 4 May.

In the headline match of the Lizzie Watkins Organ Donor Round, North Coast Raiders and Westside Wolves competed at Perth Hockey Stadium.

There was plenty of back and forth during the opening quarter, although neither side would manage to get an early score.

It wasn’t until the final minutes of the first half that a goal would be scored, with Westside Wolves’ Candyce Peacock scoring off a penalty corner to put the visitors in front 1-0 at half time.

The stalemate continued into the third quarter, with both sides putting the pressure on one another, until Madison Naish would extend the Wolves’ lead at the 45th minute.

The final quarter saw the Raiders attempt to stage a comeback, with goals via sisters Shanea and Siena Tonkin to bring the scores level.

In a thrilling conclusion, Ava Fraser-Edwards would break the deadlock with a last-gasp goal to bring the memorial trophy to the Westside Wolves 3-2.

Elsewhere, Suburban Lions defeated Whitford 4-2, two final-quarter goals saw Melville pip WASPS at the post 2-1, a late comeback effort from Hale saw them draw level with Reds 2-2, while UWA held off Victoria Park 2-1.
