WASPS have come from behind to pull off a stunning 6-4 victory over a fast-starting Reds outfit during the Goldfields Festival of Hockey on Saturday 11 May.

The Reds and the WASPS travelled to the Goldfields to go head-to-head during the Stiles Electrical Premier League Regional Round as part of the Goldfields Festival of Hockey, supported by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

Reds were off to a flying start with Brodee Foster scoring a goal within the opening two minutes of the match, only to be quickly followed by a further goal from Jammie Lewis to give themselves a head start.

Another minute later, James Cameron scored the third goal for the Reds, leaving the WASPS stunned.

Already three goals down within the first five minutes, WASPS played catch-up for the remainder of the opening term but found themselves smothered by Reds’ defensive pressure.

The second quarter saw Reds extend their lead further with a second James Cameron goal, though the WASPS would soon respond with a goal of their own via Brandon Gibbs.

The contest reached a stalemate, but the Reds went into half time holding the 4-1 advantage.

The second half saw WASPS on a mission, determined to stage a comeback.

Within minutes, Trent Mitton stepped up and scored a field goal to get the WASPS on track.

As Reds looked to stifle the WASPS’ efforts, Gibbs would score a second goal, followed by a second Mitton goal to bring the scores level at three-quarter time.

WASPS’ comeback mission continued into the final quarter, with Mitton quickly scoring to bring the scores level.

While the Reds fought hard to find a way to respond, the WASPS ultimately prevailed with a goal from Charlie McIntyre sealing the deal for the WASPS.

Elsewhere, two goals from Tom Harvie helped Westside Wolves hold off Hale 2-1, Fremantle Cockburn defeated North Coast Raiders 8-4 in a high-scoring match, UWA defeated Mods-OGM 5-2, YMCC beat out Whitford 3-1, a last-minute goal from Mark Brodie saw the match-up between Melville and Victoria Park end in a 2-2 draw.

Earlier in the week, the remainder of the mid-week matches for round five took place, which saw Hale defeat North Coast Raiders 7-1, while UWA held off Whitford 2-1.

An action-packed contest between Reds and WASPS at the Goldfields Festival of Hockey saw neither able to be separated in a 1-1 draw.

Reds and WASPS went up against each other at the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association on Saturday 11 May during the Stiles Electrical Premier League Regional Round.

Reds looked for a quick start, driving the ball up towards their goal end, only to be met by solid defence from WASPS.

Although the contest looked to be in an early stalemate, Bella Connelly got the Reds on the board in stunning fashion, launching a rocket that flew past Lizzy Duguid’s shoulder and hitting the top left corner of the net.

As WASPS looked to respond, they struggled to get past the Reds’ defence, trailing 0-1 at quarter time.

The second quarter saw WASPS continue trying to find a way to get in front but found themselves swarmed by Reds at every turn.

It wouldn’t be until the 33rd minute that WASPS would find themselves on the board, with a goal from Vicci Hyde levelling the score at 1-1.

The contest reached a stalemate once again for the final quarter.

Despite Reds having opportunities to score off penalty corners, neither side could be separated, with the contest ending in a 1-1 draw.

Elsewhere, Suburban Lions held off North Coast Raiders 3-2, Westside Wolves defeated Hale 3-1, Victoria Park defeated Melville 3-0, and UWA defeated Whitford 4-0.
