TeamStar Premier League Women’s Grand Final: Suburban Lions defeated by Hale 2-4

Twelve months after falling agonisingly short in the 2025 Premier League Grand Final, Hale have gone one better, defeating Suburban Lions by two goals to secure their first premiership since 2022. Hale wasted little time asserting themselves, striking early through Liné Malan from a penalty corner to take the lead. Both sides came out with intensity and traded possession throughout an evenly contested opening quarter, with the Lions searching for a response. Beatrice Bell stood strong in defence for Suburban Lions, helping repel a series of Hale attacking forays, but Hale continued to apply pressure and carried their one-goal advantage into the first break.Hale continued to dictate the tempo after the first break, pressing forward early as the Lions searched for a way back into the contest. Chances came at both ends, with the Lions earning a penalty corner that was well defended before Delfina Guastavino burst through the midfield, only to be denied by a sharp save from Cami Vaughan. Hale then seized control through a devastating two-minute spell, with Claire Colwill converting from penalty corners twice in quick succession to extend the lead to three goals. The Lions refused to go away, and Courtney Schonell provided a lifeline by converting a penalty corner late in the quarter. Hale threatened to restore their three-goal buffer before the break, but the Lions held firm to keep themselves within reach at halftime.

The contest tightened considerably after halftime as both sides battled for control through the midfield. The intensity of the contest showed no signs of fading after halftime, with both sides continuing to go toe-to-toe in an evenly balanced third quarter. Westside Wolves searched for a way back into the match while YMCC pressed relentlessly in pursuit of a decisive third goal, resulting in a hard-fought battle for possession across the field. The Wolves absorbed sustained pressure and gradually began to create opportunities of their own, eventually earning reward when Pat Andrew converted from a penalty corner to cut the margin to one goal. With momentum shifting, the Wolves pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages of the quarter. One promising circle entry slipped out of bounds, while another penalty corner opportunity saw Tom Harvie's shot deflected away by Tyler Lovell, preserving YMCC's advantage. Despite the Wolves' late charge, YMCC held firm to take a narrow lead into the final break. YMCC came out with intent in the final quarter, pressing forward early in search of an insurance goal, but Westside Wolves continued to apply pressure as they fought desperately to keep their premiership hopes alive. The Wolves' determination was evident throughout the term, although frustrations began to surface as YMCC's defence repeatedly denied their attacking advances. At the other end, Tom Harvie produced a crucial charge-down to deny a Cooper Burns penalty corner drag flick, before Matt Edwards made another important save from Burns as the pressure mounted. YMCC's persistence eventually paid off when Burns found the breakthrough from a penalty corner, restoring the two-goal buffer and placing one hand on the premiership trophy. The Wolves continued to attack in search of a response and even withdrew Edwards for an extra field player in the closing stages, but YMCC's defence remained resolute. A late penalty corner chance for the Wolves saw Tom Harvie's shot drift wide under pressure, and with that, YMCC held firm to secure the premiership. YMCC’s Angus Adamson was awarded the Merv Adams medal for his efforts.
