Fremantle Cockburn defeated WASPS 6-2
Fremantle Cockburn secured their place in the TeamStar Premier League Men’s Finals and celebrated goalkeeper Ben Rennie’s 300th Premier League appearance in style, recording a commanding 6-2 victory over WASPS at Lakelands Hockey & Sporting Facility on Saturday 29 August. The Magpies made a flying start, with Rhys Angwin opening the scoring from open play in just the fourth minute. Although WASPS responded quickly through a field goal from Jack Cudby, Fremantle Cockburn seized control of the contest. Ehren Hazell converted a penalty stroke before Lachlan Rogers added a field goal and Matt Bird finished a penalty corner, giving the Magpies a commanding 4-1 lead at quarter time. The second quarter proved more competitive as WASPS searched for a way back into the match. Charlie McIntyre reduced the deficit with a field goal, but Fremantle Cockburn quickly restored their three-goal advantage when Hazell struck again from open play to make it 5-2 at half-time. The Magpies added another goal in the third quarter, with Gobindraj Gill converting a penalty corner to extend the lead to four. Despite WASPS' efforts to mount a comeback in the second half, Fremantle Cockburn’s defence stood strong as they comfortably closed out a 6-2 win and confirmed their Finals berth.

However, it was YMCC who struck first, as Cooper Burns found the back of the net twice in the space of two minutes with a pair of field goals to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at quarter time. The Panthers tightened the contest in the second term as they searched for a route back into the game, but YMCC’s defence stood strong to keep Victoria Park scoreless and maintain their advantage heading into half-time. Burns completed his hat-trick in the third quarter, converting a penalty corner to further strengthen his grip on the Eric Pearce Top Goal Scorer award and extend YMCC’s lead to three goals. YMCC continued to press their advantage in the final term, with Marshall Puzey converting a penalty corner before Padraig Munt added a field goal. The opening quarter was a tightly contested affair, with both sides enjoying periods of possession and creating opportunities. It was UWA who broke the deadlock, as Chris Bausor converted a penalty stroke to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at quarter time. The contest remained evenly balanced throughout the second quarter, with both teams continuing to apply pressure. Whitford showed plenty of determination and were rewarded before the break when Samuel Le Dain scored from open play to level the scores at 1-1 heading into half-time. UWA regained control in the third quarter through Isaac Dyer, who found the back of the net with a field goal to restore the visitors’ advantage. Despite Whitford’s efforts to stay in the contest, UWA’s defence held firm to maintain their lead heading into the final break. The Wolves wasted no time asserting their authority, with Tom Harvie converting two penalty corners inside the opening five minutes to give the visitors an early advantage. Despite North Coast Raiders' efforts to find a way back into the contest, the Wolves’ defence remained composed and took a 2-0 lead into the first break. The second quarter was more evenly contested, with the Raiders creating opportunities through penalty corners. However, the Wolves continued to control proceedings at both ends of the field and extended their lead when Joe Welch converted a penalty corner, making it 3-0 at half-time. The Wolves took complete control after the break. Dane Gavranich and Harvie each converted penalty corners early in the third quarter before player-coach Aaron Kleinschmidt made his mark with a field goal and a penalty-corner conversion. The scoring spree saw the Wolves blow the margin out to seven goals and take a commanding lead into the final change. The visitors showed no signs of slowing down in the final quarter, piling on six more goals to complete a commanding performance. While YMCC pressed hard in search of an early equaliser, Victoria Park continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage through a field goal from Kayla O’Sullivan, giving the home side a 2-0 lead at quarter time. The contest remained competitive in the second quarter, with YMCC getting on the scoreboard when Sophie Wainwright converted a penalty corner. Victoria Park responded immediately, however, with Mischa Rodier finding the back of the net from open play before Lauren Yee added a penalty-corner goal to extend the Panthers’ lead to 4-1 at the main break. The Panthers took complete control in the third quarter with an explosive attacking display. Despite several promising attacks from both teams, neither side could find a breakthrough as the defences held firm and the match remained scoreless heading into the final term. The deadlock was finally broken in the fourth quarter when Georgina Dowd converted a penalty corner to give the Lions the lead and spark a late surge. Delfina Guastavino soon doubled the advantage with a penalty-corner goal of her own as Suburban Lions began to take control of the contest.
