Vale Joyce Bailey (nee Hewson)

Published Fri 08 Mar 2024

Hockey WA is saddened to hear of the passing of WA hockey legend, Joyce Bailey (nee Hewson).

Joyce was a dynamic and skillful inside forward, who was always aware of goal opportunities and was adept at threading her way through the circle.

As a teenager growing up in the South West town of Collie, Joyce fell in love with the sport of hockey after admiring the skill of the game while watching kids train at the local high school.

Within a few years of picking up a hockey stick, Joyce was first selected in the State team at age 16 in 1955, representing Collie at Country Week.

She went on to represent Western Australia for 7 years and the Australian team for 5 years.

Joyce remained greatly involved in coaching in the hockey community on her return to Collie.

Joyce has been named in the YMCC (Surf) Team of the Century for the 50's decade and is a member of Collie's Sporting Hall of Fame, and the Hockey WA Hall of Champions.

Hockey WA extends its condolences to Joyce's family at this time.
