WA hockey heroes make Hockeyroos impact

Published Mon 21 Feb 2022

Five Western Australians have been named in the 2022 Hockeyroos squad, headlining a new chapter for the side with a focus towards youth.

WA stars Aleisha Power, Karri Somerville, Penny Squibb, Shanea Tonkin and Georgia Wilson have been named to represent Australia’s national women’s hockey side, with the stars already notching a total of 75 appearances.

Power, Somerville, Squibb and Wilson retain their spots in the squad from 2021, with Tonkin in line to make her Hockeyroos debut after spending time in the national development squad.

The five WA players named also star for Premier League clubs across Perth, with Power, Somerville and Wilson hailing from the reigning premiers, Victoria Park, and Squibb and Tonkin representing Curtin University and North Coast Raiders respectively.

Hockey WA CEO, Fabian Ross, says he’s delighted at the selections.

“To have five WA players named this year, it’s really significant for our state – we’re thrilled for our women,” Ross says.

“I want to send heartfelt congratulations from not only myself but hockey members around the state to Aleisha (Power), Karri (Somerville), Penny (Squibb), Shanea (Tonkin) and Georgia (Wilson) as well as to all the entire Hockeyroos squad who hail from across the country.

“Being selected is a fantastic achievement.”

The Hockeyroos’ preparations have begun for the upcoming Women’s FIH Hockey World Cup in Spain and Netherlands on 1-17 July, with their sights firmly on sustained success leading into the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
