WA to host Japanese powerhouses in women's hockey showcase
Published Mon 07 Jul 2025
Two of Japan’s most prestigious women’s hockey teams – the Coca Cola Red Sparks and Sony HC Bravia Ladies – will compete in a blockbuster schedule of matches against Western Australian sides during July.
The tour, hosted in collaboration with Hockey WA, provides a rare opportunity for WA’s best – the Perth Thundersticks – and local clubs the rare opportunity to test themselves against international opposition, while also strengthening sporting ties between Western Australia and Japan.
The Coca Cola Red Sparks and Sony HC Bravia are two of Japan’s most recognisable teams in the Hockey Japan League, with a combined 19 titles between them in 21 years.
The feature matches of the series will see the Perth Thundersticks women taking on both the Coca Cola Red Sparks and Sony HC Bravia in a four-match series on Monday 14, Wednesday 16, Wednesday 23 and Monday 28 July at Perth Hockey Stadium.
These clashes will provide the Perth Thundersticks women valuable high-level competition play ahead of the Hockey One season’s commencement in October.
Players will also be able to showcase what they are made of ahead of the final team announcement later in the year.
The series also extends to Stiles Electrical Premier League sides who will be afforded the opportunity to compete against these international opponents around the mid-season break.
YMCC Hockey Club’s Stiles Electrical Premier League women will take on the Coca Cola Red Sparks on Thursday 10 July at Lemnos Field.
The Red Sparks will then return to action on Sunday 13 July against the Melville City Hockey Club Stiles Electrical Premier League women in a special event day for the club at Melville Toyota Stadium, proudly supported by the City of Melville.
The final club match will feature the Victoria Park Xavier Stiles Electrical Premier League women facing off against Sony HC Bravia on Tuesday 29 July at Perth Hockey Stadium.
All matches are free to attend.
