WASPs, YMCC play out high-scoring double-header

Published Sun 27 Jun 2021

The All Flags Premier League action kicked off this week with a double-header between the Victoria Park and Hale Hockey Club men’s and women’s sides at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.

Victoria Park claimed a strong win over Hale in the men’s, with star Jason Gabriel scoring two goals to lead the side to a 4-2 victory.

Victoria Park’s women’s side replicated the efforts of the men’s team, with Harriet Collins scoring two goals in the 18th and 43rd minutes to see Vic Park claim a 2-0 victory.

Saturday’s action kicked off with another double-header at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University, with both the women’s and men’s Curtin University sides facing the Suburban Lions and Fremantle Cockburn respectively.

Suburban Lions, without their Hockeyroos star, showed true grit to grind away a 3-1 victory over Curtin, scoring three unanswered goals with Curtin scoring a goal in the dying minutes to reduce the score line.

Curtin suffered another loss in the men’s competition, with Fremantle Cockburn claiming a 4-2 victory; Declan Spencer starred with two goals in the 25th and 56th minutes.

Curtin still remains in search of their first for the season in the men’s competition, sitting at the bottom of the standings after 13 matches thus far.

Reds handed Old Guildfordians Mundaring a 6-0 drubbing at Aquinas Turf in the men’s competition, with Brodee Foster the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick to lead the side to victory.

Whitford remain winless in the men’s competition, after top of the table Melville delivered a 5-0 defeat to the side, with James Day continuing to find the back of the net this season with two goals to his name for the match.

UWA Superturf held a double-header between the men’s and women’s UWA and Westside Wolves sides.

UWA ran away with the victory in the men’s competition, defeating Wolves 3-1 and continuing their push towards the top of the table in second place.

It was a different story in the women’s match, with Wolves handing UWA a 5-1 defeat; Wolves shared the load amongst the team with five individual scorers securing the win for the side.

Melville faced North Coast Raiders in the women’s competition, with the result ending in a 1-1 stalemate between the two sides.

A thrilling 4-4 draw and a near-upset rounded off the weekend’s All Flags Premier League action.

A double-header between WASPs and YMCC were the only two matches scheduled on a wet and wild Sunday.

A snap increase in COVID restrictions increase meant only 150 spectators were allowed to attend Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.

Bryn De Bes was the after-the-siren hero, converted the equalising penalty corner for WASPs, with the remainder of goals scored by Paul Robertson (two) and Daniel Rayney.

YMCC’s young guns pulled the trigger with Jesse Regan (two), Hamish Adamson and Max Freedman all finding the back of the net in the 4-all result.

The women’s match found a winner, WASPs women able to gain the upper hand, snatching a 3-2 victory.

Rio Olympian Kathryn Slattery told her trademark tale by netting a brace for WASPs, with teammate Melissa Luff scoring the other.

Grace Hutchison brought YMCC back into the game when she scored twice within six minutes in the second half, however WASPs proved too good for the visitors.
