2025 Hockey WA Grand Final Day preview
Published Thu 18 Sep 2025
As the 2025 Stiles Electrical Premier League season reaches its thrilling conclusion, excitement is mounting for an unforgettable Grand Final Day at Perth Hockey Stadium.
Hosted by Hockey WA on Saturday 20 September and presented by Brightside Live, the day will showcase the best of Western Australian hockey, with top-tier teams battling for premiership glory.
UWA and Victoria Park are set to go head-to-head in the Stiles Electrical Premier Division 1 Men's Grand Final, while Westside Wolves and Hale will do battle for the Stiles Electrical Premier Division 1 Women's premiership.
In the Men's Grand Final, UWA will look to pull off back-to-back premierships while Victoria Park have their sights set on their first premiership since 2012.
After securing the minor premiership with 15 wins, one draw and six losses for the regular season, UWA have reaped the benefits, defeating Victoria Park 6-1 in the Semi Final and booking an express pass to their second consecutive Grand Final.
UWA captain Coby Green said the team was feeling good ahead of the big dance.
"We had a good win last round against [Victoria Park] so we're hoping we can take that confidence and carry it into Saturday but we know it's going to be a tough game," he said.
"We have a similar team to last year's grand final but we've got a good little mix of youth and experience, it's just a nice blend.
"It's exciting when you arrive at the turf and the venue is full of people having a good time.
"It gets you more up and about in the lead up to the game.
"You walk in, get excited, maybe a few nerves, but once you get out there you're very much locked into the game."
Victoria Park have enjoyed a stellar season under the leadership of Phil Hulbert, who took on double-duty coaching roles for the club's top men's and women's sides.
The Men's team finished third on the ladder after the regular season, recording 14 wins, three draws and five losses.
After previously drawing level with Fremantle Cockburn in both of their meetings, the Panthers rose to the occasion in the Qualification Final, defeating them by a single goal to lock in a Semi Final with UWA.
Although UWA got the better of Victoria Park in the Semi Final, the Panthers would show resilience and determination in Sunday's Preliminary Final, edging out Fremantle Cockburn by a goal once again to secure their spot in the Grand Final, with hopes of breaking a 13-year premiership drought.
Closing out the day's action will be the Women's Grand Final, which will see Westside Wolves look to secure back-to-back premierships while Hale have their sights set on their first premiership since 2022.
The Wolves have been one of the competition's top perfomers throughout the regular season, securing second place on the ladder with a 16-4 record.
After a last-minute goal helped the Wolves get over the line in the Qualification Final, the Wolves held off Suburban Lions in the Semi Finals to book their second consecutive Grand Final.
Westside Wolves captain Jemma Buckley said the team was excited heading into Saturday.
"After winning last year, we know what it's like to be in a big game so we're pretty excited to do it again," she said.
"We've been focusing on what we've done all season and playing as a team has been a main one for us.
"Hale are very tough competitors for us - we beat them earlier in the season, then they beat us later on so I think it's going to be a very close game which is exciting."
Hale also put up strong performances week in and week out during the regular season, finishing in third place on the ladder with a 14-5-1 record.
Despite falling just short against the Wolves in the Qualification Final, Hale rose to the occasion against Victoria Park, defeating them in extra time, and then holding off Suburban Lions in the Preliminary Final to book their first Grand Final since their most recent premiership three years ago.
Hale player Liné Malan said the team was very excited ahead of Saturday.
"I think we've only played in a handful of Grand Finals so the girls are nervous but very excited for the huge opportunity," she said.
"We're just going to keep focusing on our game and continuing building on what we've done throughout the season so hopefully we can take that into the Grand Final.
"I love Grand Final Day - it's super exciting, you've got a big crowd but you have to switch on and focus on the game.
"I think as long as we do that, hopefully we will be all good on Saturday."
The match-ups will headline what is set to be an exciting day at Perth Hockey Stadium.
Premier Division 2’s grand finals will see YMCC take on Hale in the Men's Grand Final, while Fremantle Cockburn will go head to head with UWA in the Women's Grand Final.
