Published Fri 01 Apr 2022

The Ric Charlesworth Classic, in its third year, has impressed its namesake in Ric Charlesworth, after a red-hot start to the tournament has set a thrilling climax on finals day on Saturday 2 April at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University.

Charlesworth shared his delight on the competition so far, stating the WA-based competition has found a niche in its pre-season timeslot.

“I think it’s a really good start for the season for players to have a competitive hit out such as this before they head into the regular season,” Charlesworth said.

“A bunch of younger players get to play alongside some elite-level talent which they may not be entirely used to.

“For the established players and coaches, it’s a really good opportunity to see who’s performing on the big stage and to think about selection for the Premier League and elite-level teams in WA”

The WA hockey faithful have showed their support behind Hockey WA’s flagship pre-season tournament, with Charlesworth keen to see a good atmosphere and the exciting match ups set for finals on Saturday.

“There have been some terrific match-ups so far and I’m excited to see it eventuate into the climax on Saturday which is set to showcase some good hockey,” Charlesworth said.

“The WA hockey fans have really gotten around the competition this year – the atmosphere has been great for players and fans alike and I’m pleased to see how it’s gone.”

“People are keen as the hockey season approaches, so to have our own niche in a pre-season format really caters for those wanting to see some high-quality hockey.”
