Goldfields a hockey hub during Festival of Hockey

Published Mon 13 May 2024

The Goldfields Region came alive as a hockey hub as the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association welcomed Hockey WA and Stiles Electrical Premier League players & coaches for the Goldfields Festival of Hockey.

In the space of four days, Kalgoorlie locals had the chance to hone their coaching, umpiring, and playing skills in a series of workshops, Academy sessions, clinics, and school visits.

With 2024 being an Olympic year, people in the Goldfields also had the opportunity to learn more about what it’s like to be an Olympian in an Olympics Unleashed sundowner featuring former Hockeyroo Jayde Taylor and former Kookaburra Trent Mitton.

The Goldfields Festival of Hockey was headlined by an action-packed day of matches at the Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association turf from local competition skirmishes to the Stiles Electrical Premier League double-header between the Reds Hockey Club and the WASPS Hockey Club, drawing a large crowd of hockey fans.

The action-packed Women’s match saw neither team able to be separated in a 1-1 draw, while a hat-trick from Trent Mitton helped WASPS pull off an impressive come-from-behind 6-4 victory after being stunned by Reds in the opening quarter.

The Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association took to social media to celebrate the success of the festival.

“What a weekend of hockey!” they posted on Facebook.

“A special thanks to all members who really made the weekend great, and all those involved.

“It was a great opportunity for our members, and we can’t wait to come back next year!”

The Goldfields Festival of Hockey was proudly supported by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries.
